Asbestos use in Thailand
Re: Asbestos use in Thailand
Absolutely incredible stuff. Heat resistant, electrical resistor, can be moulded into gaskets. The problem is that it can kill you.
Asbestos is pretty harmless unless it is disturbed, so the problems come in demolition and refurbishment. Always better to have a trained and qualified survyor check your buildings out before ripping walls or ceilings down. If it is dormant in your property, it will more often than not sit there without causing you danger.

Asbestos is the curse of the docker it used to be imported into Southampton docks from South Africa it was unloaded in large bales that used to split open and the stuff was in the atmosphere inside warehouses like it was snowing.
Many dock workers including my grand father died from asbestos-is even some wives died of it from coming into contact with clothes that had been contaminated.
Kendo.

My father worked for Bristol docks, GWR and later BR goods. He died at 70 from leukaemia and although the link has never been proven, the doctors believed it was caused by continuous handling of asbestos shipments in the raw form.
Very dangerous material if handled without the right precautions. Many older high rise buildings in the UK still have asbestos as a fire retardant surrounding the structural steelwork. Perfectly safe until you need to demolish or change the building structure and release the fibres into the air. Fortunately most western countries use the correct procedures when handling the material but in developing countries, most of the information is not known or realised by the builder/employees who need to work with the material during demolition or building mods. Check to be safe.

Yes, my father too died from an asbestos related problem. His was put down to being a Royal Marine on board Battleships and Aircraft Carriers - unsafe lagging. The government didn't even try to contest his compensation claim.
So if there are any old sailors out there, get yourself checked out.

Sorry to hear that. It is not just people who work with asbestos who are being affected. This was one of the frightening things about the article...you don't even know if you are exposed....Big Boy wrote:Yes, my father too died from an asbestos related problem.
