But overheads to the British public will be significantly reduced, and a few smaller offices are probably more appropriate.

If they slashed the silly foreign aid budget from 13 billion to 6 billion (or less) then they could fix the NHS, the police/military financial budget holes plus increase the state pension etc. and on and on and on...but they won't because the PC BS holds sway. They even announced the increase in the foreign aid budget for teaching in god know where yesterday.

They are lost. We should fix our own problems before trying to tell the world how to sort it out and spending ludicrous amounts on pointless things whilst our own system is creaking and a fail....not good to put it mildly.

It's actually a great deal for the UK. We're talking Thailand here, it's not a major centre of importance despite all the PR waffle surrounding the sale. There's simply no need for such an extravagance in the middle of Bkk anymore, those days have gone. Most Embassy staff are office wallah's, so they'll be right at home in their new accommodation.

I've worked in many historical buildings - they need constant upgrade, just not designed for the modern day. In the UK, we were often restricted in what upgrades could take place anyway, often costing 3 times as much to conform to the ancient design. A few modern offices will be much nicer.

British embassy Bangkok is now sold for a cool £420m
Diplomats and consular staff at the UK Embassy in Bangkok will move to new premises by 2019, following the sale of the existing site to a joint-venture consortium of Hongkong Land, a member of the Jardine Matheson Group, and Central Group for over £420 million.
This is the biggest land deal in Thai history and the FCO’s biggest ever sale. The proceeds will be reinvested in the FCO’s overseas estate and will fund 30-40 modernisation projects around the world that are necessary for security or health and safety reasons.
The new embassy building will be based in the AIA Sathorn Tower in the central business district from where diplomats will continue to promote UK interests in Thailand, a key partner on security and prosperity, as well as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and wider region.
