Thai junta sets firm date for election

Post by Big Boy »

I've been out all afternoon, but have been hearing this on the radio. I was surprised to find nothing on the forum.

Thai junta sets firm date for election after many false starts

Thailand will hold a general election in November 2018, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said on Tuesday, the most precise date he has given yet for the vote since taking power in a 2014 military coup.

Prayuth, head of the ruling junta, said the exact date would be announced in June 2018. The junta has announced election dates at least two times in the past, only to push them back later, citing concerns such as changes to the constitution and security issues.

“Around June we will announce the date for the next election,” Prayuth told reporters at Bangkok’s Government House.

“In November we will have an election.”

“In November we will have an election.”
I think he has been misquoted. He actually said "erection", meaning you know what! (again)

I don't know that it will make any difference should it actually come to pass.

The new boss is going to be the same as the old boss!

If I remember correctly, the military will still control the parliament and courts so it doesn't matter who the PM is.

Exactly ...Does it really matter who is the current boss, I have seen umpteen different political parties in charge over the years and being an expat it has had zero effect to me at least.

The PM will not be elected and not necessarily be affiliated to any party. Can be anyone and selected by the Senate (or the House of Representatives, not sure which).

I guess Cha cha cha has already made an extended order of visiting cards.

Doesn't matter if they hold some sham of an election to attempt to gain a fig leaf of cover, it will result in a weak and spineless coalition government with 250 appointed rubber stamp "Yes" senators and the generals will still be in charge.

However, as mentioned by others above, there is little belief to be put into his words as this is the fifth time we have heard this from our own "Dear Leader."

That is why it is called a General Election - because it'll be electing a General. :duck:
