Thai ex-PM fails to show for verdict

Post by sateeb »

Former Thai PM Yingluck Shinawatra has failed to show up for the verdict in her trial over a controversial rice subsidy scheme.
Lawyers for Ms Yingluck, who is charged with negligence, said she was ill.
But the Supreme Court has issued an arrest warrant for her and has delayed the verdict to 27 September.
She has denied any wrongdoing in the scheme which cost billions of dollars. If found guilty, she faces jail and a lifetime ban from politics.
The BBC's Jonathan Head in Bangkok says the military government had tried to prevent or discourage Ms Yingluck's supporters from coming to the court for fear of an angry reaction should she be convicted and imprisoned.
Her failure to turn up for the verdict now presents the authorities with another dilemma - sending police to arrest her might also provoke unrest, says our correspondent.

Do you think they are hoping she will disappear and join her brother overseas, that way the problem just goes away.

I wonder if she's on the active watchlist for ports and borders?

I'm surprised she didn't show, but then again, with like 3000 plus people turning up to support her, I reckon that the authorities may have made a deal with her/told her to not show up.

She isn't going to jail anyhow, just have to go through the motions to make it look good and save face for everyone. I reckon she isn't fleeing, as that's what the authorities would like more than anything...but she may be co-operating with them regarding the no-show at court as it defuses the situation and it's sure getting to an emotional point.

Sources close to Yingluck told Khaosod that she left Thursday for Singapore where her brother, himself a fugitive former prime minister, was waiting. The claim cannot be immediately verified and no statement has been made about her whereabouts.
The BBC has already headlined:
Thai ex-PM Yingluck Shinawatra has fled country ahead of court verdict, sources close to her party say
The junta may have even engineered this themselves imo.

Well, the other minister that showed up to the court got 42 years for suspect work on the government to government rice deals with China...pretty harsh.

Such a poor Thai, only US$17.36m of assets in her name as of 2015 and was only in politics for 2 months before becoming PM.
