There are so many ways to come into harm's way here, especially for those holiday hero types that want to blow off steam but forget where they are.

Safety first here, remember, as cynically always. The cops are nothing more than a mop-up squad....and it's a free-for-all for everyone else.

It would be interesting to actually have real figures released about how many foreigners of all types perish here in one way or another. Never gonna happen though as I bet it is way too high.
:agree:

Thailand is a very dangerous country and you definitely have to keep your wits about you here. Most foreigner deaths here are either ruled a suicide or a blamed on the foreigner for just being here.
Thailand is still in the 21st Century very uncivilized and third-world.
And very very few foreigner deaths are even reported, the vast majority go unreported.

To continue with the thought that there are more farang deaths than reported. If an older farang dies in non suspicious circumstances and his funeral/cremation is performed here. His death may not be reported by Thai wife to his Embassy

Agree with Spitty that it can be dangerous for the unsuspecting.. but there are types who are just plain stupid and go to places where they shouldn't really venture to - especially if tonight's love of your life wants to bring you to a local Thai place where loud music, drunk locals with arms, late at night and mercenary staff and taxi drivers abound. You'll immediately be out of place with a pretty young thing on your arm and a bullseye on your forehead and not realise it. And sometimes, especially for the girls newer to to business, the girls themselves..

Looking at the list of statistics, (most of which I would typically take with a large grain of salt) another thing to note is that most of the countries with lower statistics also have a much higher level of English. Communication is key.

Here's one that surprised me..... missing Aussies. How many by choice ? or simply killed and never found.

"Australians were most likely to go missing in Indonesia — where 40 Aussies remain unaccounted for, then Thailand (39), the US (38) and the Philippines (32)"

Naturally you'll expect the ministry of utter lunacy to call it all bull ...

Foreign Ministry: Info on Thailand’s ranking as among 20 most dangerous ‘outdated’
THAILAND’S foreign ministry on Saturday denounced World Economic Forum (WEF) report that listed the kingdom as one of the 20 most dangerous countries to visit.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Busadee Santipitaks said the WEF’s Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report was outdated and biased, and did not reflect the recently improved situation, The Nation reported.

In response to a recent news report that highlighted WEF’s assessment, Busadee denied that Thailand was unsafe four visitors. The WEF report had placed Thailand at 118 out of 136 countries with a 4.0 score for tourist safety and security.

“The WEF admitted that some information was outdated, some information was biased as it was collected using questionnaires,” Busadee said.

“The WEF promised to improve its ranking methodology by using more statistics from reliable international sources and reducing the use of questionnaire surveys.”

The ministry spokesman said Thai representatives at the United Nations headquarters had contacted executives at the WEF to verify methods used in the rankings.

This was because many other international organisations such as Master Card, Expat Insider and US News & World Report, had ranked Thailand as one of the top tourist destinations, The Nation reported.

The report details levels of risks posed to tourists and businesses, taking into consideration the likeliness of violence and terrorism in the assessment.

I'm curious, where in the world is personal safety protected by anyone other than the individual?

I'd love to go there.

In nearly two decades of visiting Thailand, I've managed to avoid Pattaya thus far, the only trouble I had was getting pickpocketed in Pat pong and that could happen in any city in the world.
My bother much less lucky , he met his end in a head on motorbike collision in Chawangbeach Samui some eight years ago.

And it seems as though quite a few members of this forum are calling the Report bull....

And I have never heard of Expat Insider before.

Being a top tourist destination does not make a place any less dangerous.

Though I think putting Thailand in the top twenty is going a bit far.

I agree that Thailand can be a dangerous country to visit. I got robbed in Pattaya on my first
visit, I feel lucky that I only lost money and not my life. That happened on the 3rd day in country.
I went to Phuket for the next 3 weeks of my vacation and thankfully my travelling friend had brought extra
money. I enjoyed Kata Beach, Karon Beach and Phuket City, seen Patong beach and Kamala beach. Never had
any trouble except a guy in Patong tried to get me to pay to park my motorbike on the beach. The bus system was
cheap and interesting. My last times to Thailand though I have spent mostly in Hua Hin, where I have never
had hardly any troubles. I did gain weight as there are so many great restaurants and places to eat in Hua Hin
and area. I spent 10 days in Nong Khai on my last trip and found it to be another friendly and pretty
safe feeling small city. Best thing I found is do not get drunk. Have a few drinks, but stay alert in the evenings.
Do not pick arguments, and try to be friendly to fellow tourists as well as the local people, and don't be a
cheap charlie. Soewbd a but if your money and have a good visit.
Geezer

pictures of it.

it may be dangerous to visit here but i feel quite safe living here. compared to having lived in Chicago, L.A., London and Paris, Hua Hin is feather bed.
