Children day air show tragedy, Hat Yai

Post by Bluesky »

I am unable to find any news in the print media relating to this but apparently there has been a terrible aircraft tragedy at a children's day air display.I understand the pilot was killed. Perhaps this post can be updated as more information becomes available.

GRIPEN FIGHTER JET CRASHES AT HAT YAI AIR SHOW, PILOT KILLED
A Royal Thai Air Force pilot was killed when a jet went down during a Children’s Day air show at an airbase in the southern city of Hat Yai.

The JAS 39 Gripen was maneuvering over the airbase when it suddenly lost altitude, slam into the ground and explode. The pilot, 34-year-old Group Capt. Dilokrit Patawee, did not eject.

A fire truck rushing to the scene of the crash overturned, but no one was seriously injured.

Tragic, but probably completely avoidable. RIP pilot. Again we see shoddy reporting about this accident.

Air force probes jet fighter crash

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/securit ... hter-crash

The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) says both the pilot and aircraft were fit and in good condition before the fatal crash of a jet fighter during an air show marking Children's Day in Hat Yai on Saturday.

Witnesses said the ill-fated aircraft was making an approach to the airport to perform a so-called "surprise attack" manoeuvre when it lost control, nosedived and exploded after impact.

Yes, without wishing to speculate on a death, I would have to agree with that.

I don't know if it's normal here, but I see the pilot was given a posthumous promotion to Air Marshall.

Not sure if it is normal, but it has happened several times in the past that I am aware of.

A posthumous promotion is an advancement in rank or position in the case of a person who is dead. Posthumous promotions are most often associated with the military, but may be granted in other fields such as business, science, or the arts.
The granting of posthumous military decorations and promotions in rank are very common for soldiers and sailors who are killed in combat. The Purple Heart is one such award which is routinely presented posthumously to service members killed in action.
The presentation in the United States armed forces of posthumous rank has become less common in the 21st century, but was widely used during the era of the Vietnam War and prior. One of the most famous posthumous promotions was that of George Washington to the rank of General of the Armies of the United States. The promotion took place in 1976, one hundred and seventy seven years after Washington's death.
Promotions can occasionally be unintentionally posthumous. For instance, the Arctic explorer Captain Sir John Franklin of the Royal Navy was promoted Rear-Admiral of the Blue (the lowest rank of admiral at that time) in October 1852. He had died over five years earlier on his final expedition, but his death was not confirmed until years after his promotion.

It looks to me like the pilot didn't realise how close he was to the ground and just rolled the aircraft right into the ground.
He was killed instantly for sure, that was a bad crash.
