Hua Hin dual-track rail project to go ahead

Post by buksida »

Three dual-track rail routes costing more than 55 billion baht will be submitted to the cabinet for consideration on Nov 1, Deputy Transport Minister Ormsin Chivapruck says. The three rail lines will be proposed to the cabinet along with the draft amendment of the rail transport department act, Mr Omsin said on Sunday.

The lines – the 148km Lop Buri-Pak Nam Pho, the 165km Nakhon Pathom-Hua Hin and the 90km Hua Hin-Prachuap Khiri Khan routes – will be the first to go before the cabinet, with the investment costs estimated at 24.8 billion, 20 billion and 10 billion baht respectively.

I assume they intend to add a second line to run adjacent to the existing one? That would mean compulsorily purchasing a hell of a lot of land...

I live almost next to the railway here in Nong Karng - as I've said in previous posts many hours pass every day with no sign of a train (even when there hasn't been an accident!). Apart from holiday periods, the trains are seldom full. Presumably, the planners think that the completed newly improved railway will steal thousands of passengers from the mini-buses and make lots of money.

Keep an eye out for flying pigs...

Where is Nong Karng please? I've tried looking it up, but get offered information about a performer, not a town or village.

Trains seem to pass fairly regularly through Hua Hin. Are you on the mainline?

It obviously depends on pricing but if they make it competitive and reasonably fast, I would expect to see a lot of flying pigs

The article mentions starting at Nakhorn Pathom. As I recall from last time I used the train (many years ago) it'll still be quite slow from Hua Lamphong to there.

Maybe look to be able to buy land or houses quite cheaply in moo bahns like Tawan Tong, Hua Hin Soi 2, that are right next to the track.

Speed and safety are the only attributes to making it work. Pricing doesn't come into it. Fares are cheaper than a bottle of beer and even free on Sundays but oh so very slow.

Of course speed and safety are paramount, but say it was very quick and very safe, but very expensive, then it would significantly affect the uptake and most of the current minibus users would remain minibus users, whereas if it were quick, safe and competitively priced, it could be a viable alternative

I agree but the price hike would have to be hundreds if not thousands of percent. That's not going to happen at least not overnight. For eg the fare to BKK is as low as 44 baht or a couple of hundred for first class. Even a long haul to Butterworth is only 148 baht cheap or around 1,000 for first class sleeper and we're talking a distance of 1,000 kms.

For prices to be non-competitive there would have to be a massive price hike.

Say the trains were faster and more frequent, for which double track would be necessary, and there was a good central terminus, like Hua Lamphong, with good mass transit connections, and then the passenger vans were moved out of the city centre, I imagine the trains could be very popular. But, so far, they've only managed to move the vans, making things worse for passengers.

Construction of that new line will probably be a (another) long traffic nightmare for you Hua Hinians...

I don't mind Thailand paying 55 Billion Baht but I hope they get someone else
to build it. I.E, experts from outside of the country. Otherwise all we will be getting
is double the present accident rate! :cuss:
I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

Why? They seem to have completed much of the work in central Hua Hin without too much disruption. Why will it be a traffic nightmare?
