Grand Palace, Temple of Emerald Buddha closed from Oct 1-29

Post by PeteC »

Please be sure to tell your friends and acquaintances who are planning a holiday trip in October about this. Foreign based travel agents may not, and nothing worse than being surprised and not able to visit what you want to visit, especially for those who have never been here before. Pete

"The Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, or Wat Phra Kaew, will be closed from Oct 1 until Oct 29 in preparations for the royal cremation ceremonies of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The Royal Household Bureau on Thursday announced the temporary closure of the two venues.

People will be allowed to pay respects to the late King’s urn until Sept 30. The urn is on display in the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall inside the Grand Palace.

After the royal cremation, the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha will be reopened to tourists and members of the public on Oct 30, said the bureau.

King Bhumibol passed away on Oct 13 last year. Since then tens of thousands have been visiting to pay their respects every day.

The royal funeral ceremonies are scheduled to take place at Sanam Luang from Oct 25-29, with the royal cremation on Oct 26."

I was at Market Village earlier, and saw the large tribute they are preparing in readiness for next month's event. I snapped a few photos on my phone while there to share.

TOLD TO TONE IT DOWN, MEDIA WILL SHOULDER LOSSES FOR ROYAL FUNERAL

Instead of airing a dramatic tale of tragic romance among ancient northern royals three nights a week, Channel 3 is broadcasting “Rak Nakara” every night to rush it to completion by Oct. 3.

There will be no entertainment and a lot less advertising online and over the airwaves next month as websites and broadcasts go monochrome and things are toned down on all platforms to show respect for His Majesty, the late King Bhumibol.

The military government on Tuesday told news agencies to refrain from airing entertainment content all through October in the run-up to the royal funeral. Meanwhile media and advertising associations are suggesting an advertising blackout to show respect for the late monarch.

By The Nation http://www.nationmultimedia.com/detail/ ... s/30328110

The notorious full moon parties on the Pha Ngan island in Surat Thani will be cancelled next month out of respect for the Royal Cremation.

Krirkkrai Songthani, Pha Ngan district chief, said he has instructed all government agencies on the island, the village heads and tambon chiefs to strictly observe the ban on the full moon parties.

He said the ban covered the parties on the first full moon of the month and other celebrations.

“All the half-moon or other parties will also be cancelled throughout the month on the island,” Krirkkrai said.

I've been down to Bluport today to look at their tribute to the late King. They have chosen to use live flowers in their trute, and very nice it looks too.

Tourists warned to be ‘respectful’ as Thailand prepares for late king’s cremation
A YEAR following the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Thai capital is expecting to draw in close to 250,000 people for a grand cremation ceremony spanning four days from Oct 25 to Oct 29. The actual Royal Cremation will take place on Oct 26, and is declared a national holiday.

Some 70,000 security personnel will aid in controlling crowds during the period, the replicas of the funeral pyre will be placed in various locations around Bangkok to help disperse crowds.

At the moment, the King’s body has been lying in state in the Grand Palace where thousands of black-clad mourners have been queueing daily to visit.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has issued a travel advisory calling for visitors and tourists to be “respectful” and to behave appropriately during the period.

“We also ask tourists and visitors for their understanding and patience should they experience delays or some routes may be closed to traffic,” the TAT said.

“Also, we would like to ask visitors for their understanding that this is a sensitive time for Thailand, and they should respect the feelings and sensitivities of the Thai people.”

During the period, many locals and mourners will be dressed in black, and the advisory mentions that while tourists are not obligated to follow suit, they should be aware about dressing appropriately in public.

“Visitors to the kingdom at this time will get to see the great love and reverence that the Thai people have for their beloved King in the way they mourn and pay their respects,” the advisory added.

On top of that, all gambling permits will be revoked in the month of October out of respect for the King, and this effectively extends to a ban on Muay Thai matches.

Will shopping malls and tourist attractions be closed on 26 October in Thailand?

Tesco Lotus, a big supermarket chain, has announced that they will close all 1,900 stores across Thailand at 2:00 pm on 26th October in order to allow their 63,000 employees to pay their last respects to King Bhumibol. This is potentially huge as other businesses will surely follow.
