What's cancelled, closed and open during mourning period
In the wake of His Majesty King Bhumibol’s death Thursday, the authorities have called for 30 days without entertainment.

Most events this weekend have been canceled, and some venues announced they would close temporarily, either for the day, through the weekend or until further notice. Some will remain open as usual, only canceling special events.

What does this mean for people living in the capital? What will be open and what will be closed? We put together what we know to expect so far. Check back for updates, and as a general rule: Call ahead first.

I've seen the following message posted in several places, and think it should be shared. Thanks to Terry for bringing it to my attention.
Recommendations regarding Mourning Period for His Majesty King Bhumibol AdulyadejThailand is now in an official period of mourning following the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

In this regard, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) would like all visitors to Thailand to continue with their travel plans as normal. Furthermore, kindly be advised of the following:
• Many Thai people will be wearing black or white clothing as a sign of mourning. This is not required of visitors but if possible, they should wear sombre and respectful clothing when in public.
• Visitors should refrain from conducting any inappropriate or disrespectful behaviour.
• Tourist attractions will be open as usual with the exception of Wat Phra Kaeo (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) and the Grand Palace, as they will be the venue of the Royal Funeral Rites.
• The Government has asked for the cooperation from the entertainment venues; such as, bars and nightclubs to consider the opening of their business operations during this time. The decision will be made by the individual owners.
• Most of the traditional and cultural events will be taking place as usual, although the celebrations may be changed for appropriateness as a mark of respect, or the events may be dedicated to the memory of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
• All transport, banks, hospitals and other public services will be operating as usual.
• The related authorities have stepped up safety and security measures for all Thais and visitors to facilitate their travelling around the country.
• For any enquiries, please contact our TAT domestic offices or Tel.: 1672.

TAT would like to thank all visitors for their understanding and supporting Thailand during this period of time.

The Football Association of Thailand has suspended all domestic fixtures in line with a government directive to limit entertainment and festivities for a 30-day period.

While the Nov.16 match, originally scheduled in Bangkok, will fall just outside that 30-day limit, the restrictions could limit the ability to prepare for the game.

If Thailand cannot host the game, it is likely to be played in a neutral country, with Singapore or Malaysia the most likely venue.

[Edit] Other sources such as the Bangkok Post are saying this season has closed. League positions will remain as they are, and cup competition will be decided by lottery.

BBC news (viewed from the UK) had a correspondent on Hua Hin beach interviewing tourists and beach restaurant vendors. They have been asking about the general mood of the resort. They have also stated that you can still purchase alcoholic beverages but please show respect and sympathy towards Thai people. The correspondent also said if you are planning a trip to Thailand you should consider packing black clothing and conduct yourself in a reserved manner in this sensitive climate and that would be appreciated by Thai people.

The following information is from Tourism Authority of Thailand:
As Thailand is currently in a period of national mourning after the passing of the beloved monarch His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, many thousands of mourners have gathered around the Grand Palace in Bangkok to be present for the royal religious rites and ceremonies taking place and to pay their respects to the father of the nation. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) would like to ask that members of the public stay updated via media announcements and notices from the Bureau of the Royal Household as well as the Royal Thai Government to ensure accurate information. We also request that the solemnity of these rites are observed and the visitors – local and international – wear respectful attire.

In the period of national mourning, some festivals and activities in the kingdom have been cancelled or postponed. Other events will go ahead as planned but may be toned down as a mark of respect. Please see the list of events that are postponed or cancelled in the following page.

The TAT would like to recommend that any visitors with travel or tourism plans reconfirm with agents and check local media regularly as well as follow the advice of the local authorities for announcements and updates. They should also be aware that in some areas transportation could be affected. We also ask tourists and visitors for their understanding and patience should they experience delays or some routes may be closed to traffic.

What can we expect from King Bhumibol's funeral rites
For the first time in 70 years, Thailand will witness a funeral for a king, an elaborate ceremony that usually lasts for a year.

The funerary rites for His Majesty the Late King Bhumibol began on Friday with a symbolic bathing of his body at the Grand Palace and will end in cremation at Sanam Luang. Tens of thousands of are expected to participate in the final farewell to their revered king, and millions more will likely watch televised broadcasts of the rituals.

The body of King Bhumibol, who died at 88, is currently in the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall inside the Grand Palace compound.

Like his late mother Srinagarindra who died in 1995, King Bhumibol has been placed inside a modern-style coffin instead of the traditional royal urn, or Kot, in the manner of the ancient monarchs.

But the Kot will play a prominent role throughout the rites. An empty Kot will be the center of all the ceremonies in the throne hall, and palace guidelines dictate that King Bhumibol be known as “His Majesty the King in His Kot.”

Much of the funeral will be series of Brahma-Hindu rituals full of mystic symbolism. An example of this was Friday’s royal bath, at which Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn poured water on his father’s chest and brushed his hair before breaking the comb, symbolizing his entry into an afterlife without need of mortal beauty.

Buddhist prayers will also be significant. In fact, monks are set to chant their prayers in front of the Kot for the next 172 days, day and night, until Jan. 21. Prayers each day will last from 6am to 9pm.

Public mourners will be allowed to pay respect in front of the symbolic Kot inside the Grand Palace, but only after 15 days of Buddhist prayers have passed, according to a palace statement published Saturday.

In the meantime, members of the public can queue up to sign their condolences on a guestbook at the Grand Palace.

While prayer continues in the throne hall, construction of the cremation pyre will begin on Sanam Luang, whose formal English name is the Royal Cremation Ground, in reference to the past funerals of kings and queens in history.

It may be called a pyre, but the structure will look more like a pavilion boasting traditional artworks and intricate woodcraft. The pyre is designed to resemble Mount Meru, the heavenly center of the universe in both Buddhism and Hinduism.

The long funeral will finally reach its climax when the king’s body is brought in an elaborate procession to the pyre for his cremation. Massive crowds are expected to flood the historic quarter around Sanam Luang on that day.

The late king’s designated heir, Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, will likely be crowned as King Rama X after the cremation.

Do's and don'ts of mourning period for expats and visitors

As Thailand begins a new week since His Majesty King Bhumibol’s death led to the declaration of a year-long mourning period, foreign tourists and residents might wonder what is okay and what is not.

From clothing to conversation, here’s an attempt to answer some of those questions during this difficult time.

What Should I Wear?
Dress Appropriately: Black and white is best. While nobody outside of government is obligated to wear black or white, it is advisable to avoid wearing flashy colors or party clothes.

Certainly pay greater attention to expectations of modesty — people are less likely to be tolerant of things they might just roll their eyes at normally. Put on a shirt, guys, preferably one with at least short sleeves.

Wearing dark colored clothes such as blue or gray is okay too. Consider bringing a black coat or cover when going out into the public sphere as a sign of respect.

Okay to Share My Opinion of the Royal Family?
The monarchy has long been a sensitive subject, something that has grown into near-paranoia under the increasingly liberal application of the laws against insulting the Royal Family.

Insulting, criticizing or even discussing the monarchy in a way that upsets someone can get you in serious trouble, even though if you’re a foreign national. Best advice: Listen to people but don’t talk about the monarchy.

How to Pay Respects?
It’s a historic time, and guests are welcome to participate in public expressions of mourning. Books for members of the public to sign their condolences are available at several locations including the Grand Palace’s Sahathai Samakom Pavilion (daily 8:30am to 4pm) and City Hall (9am to 4pm) and district offices throughout Bangkok (9am to 4pm).

Is All Fun Prohibited?
Private party? Enjoy but consider the sensitivities of neighbors or passers-by who may not be happy if they hear you. Turn the speakers down from 11 and use your “indoor voice.”

The government has clarified that entertainment in the private sector at bars or night clubs is okay so long as it is held behind closed doors.

What’s Open?
Many events this month and next have been canceled, and nightlife venues from Nana and RCA to Khaosan Road have gone dark, though some remain open as usual.

Most tourist attractions will be open as usual. However, the Grand Palace, where the royal funerary rituals are taking place, will be closed to the public until Friday.

Most restaurants, cafes and movie cinemas will open as usual. We’ve been updating a list here. Whatever your plan is, check online or call ahead.

Free black mourning shirts and ribbons for low-income people, budget shirts also to be subsidized

Finance permanent secretary Somchai Sujjapongse announced today that the eight million Thai citizens registered as low earners will receive free black shirts so that they can observe the mourning period for the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej for the coming year.

The shirts will be given out by state-run banks. They will cost about THB50 to make each shirt and the money needed for the project will be part of the government’s initiative to assist low-income citizens, reported Bangkok Post.

"Although the government has said it is not necessary for all people to wear black, the Finance Ministry is of the opinion that it would be good if the low-income people can wear black to mourn for the late king," Somchai said.

In related news, the government has asked clothing manufacturers to increase production of black fabric and clothing in response to the increased need for mourning clothing.

It was widely reported that black clothing was sold out in markets and department stores over the weekend, as well as some sellers overcharging for these in-demand products.

Clarification on the football situation in Thailand for the rest of this season..........

Thailand-Australia WCQ remains in Bangkok, Muangthong take PLT crown

The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) has performed a swift U-turn by announcing that next month's World Cup qualifier at home to Australia will be played in Bangkok as originally planned.

On Friday, the FAT had suggested it would request a change to a neutral venue or a switch to Australia, following last Thursday's passing of Thailand's revered monarch, King Bhumipol Adulyadej. The Thai government had announced a 30-day mourning period in which entertainment events would be cancelled or toned down but, on Saturday, it announced that sport could carry on as normal.

Another blow for Hua Hin as country mourns late King
The death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej has plunged Thailand into a year-long period of mourning, with several provinces cancelling tourist events and festivals.

This is another blow for the tourist town of Hua Hin, which is only just beginning to recover from the fallout of bomb attacks in August.

Tourists had deserted the resort town after the twin bomb attacks that killed two people and injured 30. It was only a few weeks ago that tourists started returning.

"Tourism has started picking up following the bomb attacks," said Massupa Eiam Sam-Arng, a surveyor from the Hua Hin Tourism Office. "Tourists, especially from China and India, have started to return."

But just as things were picking up, Hua Hin now faces another sombre situation - the passing of King Bhumibol.

With his death, Thailand is in mourning for a year. The government has also asked entertainment outlets to "tone down" their operations for 30 days.

“I think the people are very sombre," said Garry Allman, a tourist from Europe. "We all must show respect to a very good king."
