Thai Navy to buy three Chinese submarines

Post by buksida »

The Royal Thai Navy has resolved to buy three submarines from China in a government-to-government contract worth Bt36 billion, Navy Commander-in-Chief Adm Kraisorn Chansuwanit said Thursday.

He said he did not know when Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan would submit the proposed procurement to the Cabinet for deliberation.

The Bangkok Post reported on June 26 that the navy had picked Chinese submarines costing 12 billion baht, quoting a source on a government committee. The majority of the 17-strong committee reportedly voted to buy the Chinese vessels, saying it was the “best value for money.” The rest were said to be split between submarines from Germany and South Korea. The navy also received offers from Russia, Sweden and France.

The source said China beat other rivals by offering subs equipped with superior weaponry and technology. Its subs are also able to stay underwater longer.

Why don't they trade the aircraft carrier sitting at the dock in Sattahip. Trade one white elephant for another then they would be even. China could use another aircraft carrier too.

Absolutely! At least one of them will stay stuck underwater with their unfortunate crew all dead, until the international community retrieves it!

The navy has to get this past Happy Face yet, so I doubt very much that it will happen.

What is an interesting fact is that the Thai navy has maintained a submarine division for all the years since 1951 when it's last two submarines were retired!

what a total waist of money, i am all for defense spending, but this so stupid. who is Thailand going to fight? Cambodian fishing boats?

they need a coast guard with patrol boats and aircraft. and if anything, a ANTI SUBMARINE WARFARE unit to fight the chinese, not frickin' buy it from them. don't you think the chicoms have counter measures for these buckets?

and most important a counter insurgency force for all of Thailand.

"ok men, it is very important that we don't make any noise while on patrol. None. And no smoking. Or drinking. And everything has to be done perfectly all the time or we are all going to die. understand?"

That is interesting. And I didn't know that they had subs in the past.
Didn't the man in the palace make a funny statement some years ago opposing the purchase of submarines saying that they would get stuck in the mud in the shallow waters around Thailand?

Navy submits B36bn plan to buy subs

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/politic ... o-buy-subs

The navy has submitted a funding plan for its 36-billion-baht submarine procurement project to the cabinet for consideration with the tied-over budget for the subs to be spread over 11 years, a navy source says.

The source said the funding request to buy three Chinese submarines is now waiting to be put on the cabinet's agenda.

Gen Prawit also instructed the navy to launch a public relations drive to "educate" people about the necessity to have the submarines for defence purposes.

Interestingly that Australia has signed with a France supplier to build twelve (12) subs at 108 billion baht each. Obviously more expensive being built in Australia and perhaps more advanced than the Chinese type but savings have been made to cut out the noodle bar and Karaoke room.

From ABC news
A French company has beaten competitors from Germany and Japan to secure the contract to build Australia's next fleet of submarines, with the Federal Government promising thousands of Australian jobs will be created.
Key points:
•Australia's next fleet of submarines will be built in Adelaide
•The project will create 2,800 jobs nationwide
•The design will come from French company DCN
The much anticipated $50 billion contract has been settled in the febrile, pre-election period and ensures the 12 new submarines will be built at Adelaide's Osborne shipyards.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull flew to Adelaide to make the official announcement, confirming French company DCNS had won the bid to build a modified version of its nuclear submarine called the Shortfin Barracuda.

Having some experience and knowledge in this area. The Thais have bought low tech subs, not much use in the Asia Pacific region where a significant number of countries have bought very high tech French and German submarines.
A dud buy!

Prawit confirms submarine purchase

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/securit ... e-purchase

Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon has confirmed the navy will buy submarines from China at 12 billion baht each, starting with the fiscal 2017 budget.
The purchases would be made one at a time, Gen Prawit said.

The selected type of Chinese submarine was a good vessel and came with new technology, Gen Prawit said at Government House on Friday.

He was responding to questions about reports the navy would acquire three Yuan class S26T submarines from China.

The price tag of 12-billion-baht each was not high, given their long service life, when financed through a 10-year tied budget, Gen Prawit said.

In explaining the need for the vessels, he said Thailand had plenty of marine resources within its territorial waters in the Andaman Sea, and all neighbouring countries had submarines including Myanmar,...
