Thailand tourism situation

Well, At Least That's Clear:
Phuket Governor Bans Beach Chairs, Restricts BYO Umbrellas

So all beach chairs are banned. Tourists can bring their umbrellas but if they want to unfurl them it must be in the 10% zone!

It’s none of my business what people say and think of me. I am what I am and do what I do. I expect nothing and accept everything. It makes life so much easier.

Yes, a ridiculous outcome, but an excellent article - I like the style of this paper!

So now, all is plain.
Tourists may not bring chairs of any kind to any Phuket beach. But they may bring their own umbrellas, although these may only be unfurled in the 10 percent of the beaches allocated for unfurled umbrellas.
The crackdown on beach chairs on all Phuket beaches will come soon, the governor intimated. But first, a public relations campaign is to be commenced to give Phuket's resorts the responsibility of explaining the ban on beach chairs to all tourists. So it is the resort managers who will have to tell the tourists that they may not bring chairs to Phuket beaches.
The whole idea about the military clearing the beaches of Phuket last year appeared to be about getting rid of the commercialism and keeping the tourists. The latest strategy appears to be about getting rid of the tourists and keeping the commercialism.
This is the way

Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
I've lived in Thailand my fair share of years in Thailand and have visited about everywhere here in the country that I have wanted to but I've never been to Phuket nor do I want to. I've read all the stories and I always feel like I need to wash up when I'm done.
What a sick sick place.
Cheers!

"The mayors who spoke to Phuketwan today deferred to Phuket Governor, Nisit Jansomwong, and said they did not wish to confuse the issue."

Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
I first went to Phuket 15 years ago. It was wonderful, inexpensive not too crowded, felt very safe. A small but very contained go-go area,
But when it went downhill, it fell of a cliff.
I have met several people in HH who sold up in p and moved to HH.

More from Phuket news TV about chairgate - a humorous report on youtube (short advert about 50 secs in). I didn't realise so many elderly people visited Patong!

Thailand drops in global tourism rankings
Thailand's position in the global tourism rankings declined last year as the civil unrest has taken its toll on both arrivals and receipts.
The Land of Smiles saw its status on the world's international tourist arrival chart slip to 14th last year from 10th in 2013.
The 2014 tourism earnings chart also saw Thailand drop to ninth from seventh a year ago, according to new figures from the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
Thailand's 2014 international arrivals fell 6.7% from 2013 to 24.8 million.
Its 2014 tourism receipts contracted 8.1% to US$38.4 billion from $41.8 billion in 2013.
The 10th position in arrivals was taken over by Mexico last year with a record 29.1 million people.
In terms of international receipts, Thailand's 2013 ranking of seventh was assumed by Britain in 2014 with $45.3 billion.

Funny that, I was listening to the news in the car 2 days ago, and the official announcement was that tourism had increased by over 23%.

That would be the Ministry of Bullshit, the same one that announced that public debt was not a problem in Thailand ...

I'm not so sure it's just the 'civil unrest' as per that article, but also the strength of the baht.

And perhaps also the fact that people don't generally holiday in military dictatorships.I'm not so sure it's just the 'civil unrest' as per that article, but also the strength of the baht.
Thailand tourist slump continues
Apart from Spain under Franco, Dubai, Egypt, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Bhutan if you can afford the Visa, China etc etc.STEVE G wrote:And perhaps also the fact that people don't generally holiday in military dictatorships.I'm not so sure it's just the 'civil unrest' as per that article, but also the strength of the baht.
Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
And another obvious one. Thailand has been getting a lot of bad press recently. Although it seems to have gone a bit quieter now.
