Govt to increase alcohol tax again
Govt to increase alcohol tax again
Drinkers are going to face higher prices on beer, wine and liquor after midnight Tuesday, following cabinet approval on new alcohol tax rates.
The Excise Department has ordered its officials to be on alert to prevent the smuggling of untaxed alcohol and the hoarding of liquor following the decision.
The alcohol tax is divided into two parts - product value and alcohol content.
The maximum tax for beer will be maintained at 60% of the product's value, but the effective tax rate per litre of 100% alcohol content will rise from 100 baht to 300 baht.

If I understand this correctly it means stronger beers will face more tax?buksida wrote: The maximum tax for beer will be maintained at 60% of the product's value, but the effective tax rate per litre of 100% alcohol content will rise from 100 baht to 300 baht.
Well the strongest larger here is Chang at 6.5%... it's also considerably cheaper than Singha at 5%, so I guess we'll see Chang increase in price. This gives Singha the opportunity to either a) gain some market share as they become more competitive or b)increase their price anyway to milk what they can from their current customers. Who's taking bets on B?
If Chang goes up in price, Leo will almost certainly follow suit, even though it's also only 5%.

The start of the of trying to claw back money after the rice pledging fiasco.....
Re: Govt to increase alcohol tax again
The full article mentions that the price impact on beer with be an increase of about 3-7 baht per bottle. So I guess Chang might increase in price by 7 baht per bottle.

My supplier tells me the tax will increase the price of a bottle of wine by around 50-60 baht.oakdale160 wrote:What is the tax on wine which is very expensive in Thai?
Re: Govt to increase alcohol tax again
Unlikely. The tax increase is a maximum of 7% (depends on alc vol) which equates to about 4 baht (on Leo for example), so if the bars are putting prices up by 10 baht they're making more per bottle than they used to!richard wrote:Another nail in the bar owners coffins

Cos rents are crazy cheap compared with Bintablock, minimum of 50% for the few I know the rents of in the Bintablock. Example bar for sale in Soi 80 at the moment and rent is 12,000 Baht.

Here we go again with another price hike ... it'll soon be cheaper to get a beer in Malaysia!
Higher alcoholic drink and tobacco prices soon
Alcoholic drink and tobacco prices will be higher by two percent possibly in March after Thailand Sports Act is announced in the Royal Gazette.
The sports bill was passed into law by the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) in January and is pending announcement in the Royal Gazette within 60 days.
Under the law, exporter, importer and producer of alcoholic drinks and tobacco are mandated to contribute 2% of their annual excise tax they pay to the sports fund.
The mandated contribution to the fund will be surely passed on by business operators to consumers by raising retail price.
It was expected that retail prices will be 3-5 baht higher.
The Excise Department collected around 200 billion baht in excise tax last year.
