Crocs Escape in Pattaya......?

Post by pharvey »

Thailand tourist park hunts for escaped crocodiles

The owners of a tourist park just outside the Thai beach resort of Pattaya are scrambling to track down missing crocodiles after dozens escaped when floods swept the area over the weekend.

Suthawut Temtub, a spokesman for the Million Years Stone Park and Crocodile Farm, said Tuesday that 28 crocodiles have been recaptured since breaking away from a park enclosure on Sunday night.

He said the farm houses more than 2,000 crocodiles and it is not yet known how many are missing.

Suthawut says the crocodiles range from 6.5 to 13 feet (2 to 4 meters) in length.

Heavy downpours over the weekend caused flooding in Thailand's east, including areas around Pattaya.

Something else to watch out for in Patts......

That place is quite a bit out of Pattaya to the south towards Sattahip on the ocean side of Sukhumvit. It's a tough area to find them as development is not that heavy and still plenty of woods, klongs and other places to hide. They'll know where they are when pet dogs and people's free range chickens start to go missing. Pete

5,000 Baht reward should help - but How much is a Croc worth??

Bangkok Post
The deputy director-general said he was confident that the water level would not overflow the Chao Phraya River’s 2.5-metre-high flood embankment, but the agency would monitor the situation closely.

Meanwhile, teams of hunters on Thursday said they had caught 29 of the many crocodiles that escaped from a tourist park after days of heavy rain triggered widespread flooding in Pattaya, Chonburi.

Million Year Stone Park chief Suan Panonwattanakul the crocodiles escaped on Sunday through a hole in a large pool, caused by heavy flooding. The 10-rai pool housed 2,890 crocodiles.

Staff had so far recaptured 29 crocodiles, many of them four to five metres in length.

The crocodile farm will pay a 5,000 baht reward to people who provide information leading to each capture of a crocodile, Mr Suan said.

The search for the missing reptiles will continue until the staff are certain that areas around the park are safe, he said.

Stronger pool walls will be built urgently to ensure there is no repeat of the incident, he added.

What puzzles me is that this seems to be an annual occurrence (OK, not alway this farm). If it's such a problem, shouldn't they be putting their money into prevention?

Maybe if a farang spots one he should ask for 6000 bounty as the enterance fee at the park is dual pricing for the farang.

They seemed to have moved. The location I mentioned above is still there with their sign and buildings, but their current website map puts them east of Pattaya back in the bush. That will make it even more difficult to find the crocs as no containment by the sea or large highways. In fact, they're not far from the main Mabprachan reservoir which is also used for recreation. If they get in there, we could have some "Jaws" type stories. Pete

That would require people to think about the future, or to think ahead. Have you been drinking BB, or just hoping that maybe one day......... :thumb:
