The non smoking Ban in England (bless her)

Post by komfortablynumb »

Mr Angry here.
if anyone wants to know why i am angry.
Listen to Jeremy Vine on BBC2 Monday.
the vitreolic (new word) attack on smokers is even too much for me to bare.
Obviously the world is going insane.
Recently we banned smoking in enclosed public spaces.
Fair enough by me. Why should non smokers breathe in expelled nicotine.
Or the ghastly cloud that envelopes SMOKERS.........
Rightly so obeying the law we went outside.
Now the whingers are still complaing.
Apparently smokers get the best seats in the pub garden.
I would like to see that argument played out in darkest January.
A mother worried that a passing smoker would burn her childs eye out, as obviously a cigarette at waist level
on the end of an arm was dangerous.
Oh come on lets put this into perspective.
The non smoking vegatarian 4+4 school run drivers phart a lot more than me.
But do i complain.
Smoking is stupid.
It kills and maims people.
I know that.
I have given up many times.
Obviously 1 to less.
I open this up for discussion.

As a secondary point.
Are the Cafes in Amsterdam now selling dope to customers and then directing them to the nearest exit?
Are the muslim smoking huka cafes just shut?
Can you eradicate stupid behaviour by banning it?
Sorry to everyone if i apear to be stupid.
My mrs thinks i am watching porn downstairs on my computer.
Probaly wouldn't get me in so much trouble.

Apparently smokers get the best seats in the pub garden
In most parts of Australia if they serve food in the beer garden you are not allowed to smoke in that area during the hours that food is being serverd.
A lot of pubs here in Perth have now made a sort of mini covered public bar outside for those who want to smoke. If the pubs are not providing those places, then all that is left is the carpark.

Its great, I love it. Feedback is pretty positive too.

Can't wait for the Perth rule to be imposed here (UK).

Despite the prior warnings of disaster from many Pub owners I have just heard on the radio that many establishments in London are reporting increased sales since the intro of the smoking ban. I always thought that this would be the case as I have not used pubs for years as I prefer to eat and drink in a smoke free environment.
Pity the same rules are not introduced to eating places in Hua Hin/Thailand. I know that most Air Con places discourage smoking but it still ruins a good meal at outdoor places.

The City of Fremantle today went a step further and introduced a smoking ban on the footpath. A very popular area where patrons had their coffee read the paper and had a cig.
Not much fun if you had to walk through the haze though.

I think it's in New York (and possibly California) where they've outlawed smoking outside full stop, havn't they?
Smoking in public parks was banned in Thailand a little while ago. So, no lighting up in Lumphini Park or elsewhere. I think the police were enforcing it for a while, but I'm not sure if they still are.
It wasn't a littering issue, simply one of passive smoking. I'm a smoker and that's fair enough, but I would have thought that someone was more likely to be poisoned by carbon monoxide in central BKK, than any cigarette smoke they might just chance to inhale. Neither of them are good - BTW.
On the same theme, I also seem to remember that years ago the Parisians banned smoking inside bars and cafes. However, those owners who wanted to, found a loophole in the law and as long as they put signs up saying that non smokers were welcome, they could allow their smoking patrons to continue. That was at least 15 years ago though, so I assume the law may have changed by now.

Soon you will need a good size loo with good extractor facilities and a good TV and computer roll out desk with broadband access

Going by the speed in Thailand you could spend a lot of time on the loo and smoke more than your daily average!!!!!

I went to a meeting at a rather large government building in London last week. It was disgusting having to fight my way past the hoards of smokers blocking both entrances.

These entrances were on the main road leading from Trafalger Square to Westminster - what sort of impression is this giving to the general public and tourists?

Even though they were stood in the open air, the sheer volume of people smoking were absolutely polluting the clean London air.

The last company I worked for in the UK offered all employees a referendum on banning smoking in the office. This was a privately owned company that had relocated out of central London. 70% had to be in favour of the ban for it to effected. The ban was passed, but not by that much over 70%.
A little while later one of the owners asked me how I had voted. I had abstained, despite the fact that I'm a smoker.
He couldn't understand my decision until I said that I thought it would have been wrong for me to have voted against the ban when I knew that my smoking was certainly affecting those around me in the department.
The net result was that I cut down from 30 odd a day in the office to maybe 10 outside.
I bet noone's allowed to smoke outside the office now - even at the side entrance.

smoking

Post by redzonerocker »

are you sure the pollution was from the smokers or from the millions cars/buses?
i'm all for the smoking ban in public enclosed spaces such as pubs & restaurants.
but outside in the open air? lets get it in perspective. smoking outside causes little or no air pollution compared to the crap expelled from motor vehicles.
clean london air??

ps

Heard that in California you cannot smoke on the beach. Instant thought was - take a plastic bag with your smokes and lighter and go for a paddle. Apparently the rule applies to 5 kms out from the shoreline

Now there's a business opportunity for a man with a boat. 'Smoke cruises inc!!)
