What choices are there? People have to stop treating animals like they were human, and take other appropriate steps if they can't provide a home and a "human" environment for them. 20,000 dogs not slaughtered/eaten would reproduce into 50,000 new dogs within a year if a country doesn't sterilize in an organized fashion. So what do the Chinese do, they eat them. Not a big surprise given that 65 years ago they were eating what trees were left under Mao's infamous "Great Leap Forward" debacle.

Control dog reproduction properly and you won't have "festivals" like this. Don't control it and the economically disadvantaged Chinese will eat well....with a smile on their faces that they're not eating wild vegetation like their ancestors. This is still a primitive part of the world folks regardless of what you may read, and central and northern Thais have eaten dogs for centuries as well, but it doesn't make the TOT brochure. Pete

There are plenty of Chinese alive today whose parents were boiling tree bark for food quite late last century, of course they have a catholic (small c} attitude towards what they eat. Eating horses, dogs, cats isn't the issue for me, it's the horror stories like the stealing of pets (it's naive and also strange to assume *the dogs are all strays so we have to eat them*}, also skinning and even boiling them alive that are the reasons this trade should be controlled. The Yulin festival is numerically (in terms of dogs eaten) a microscopically small issue in the dog-eating world but at least it focuses attention. China's growing (pet owning} middle class are heavily against dog-eating, and are trying to drive legislation forward, of course in rural areas it's not seen the same way.
