The 5 most British dishes
The 5 most British dishes
Somebody has sent me this link to 'The 5 most British dishes at the Taste of Britain food festival', and i thought it might generate some fun discussion. http://bangkok.coconuts.co/2016/03/16/5 ... d-festival
My thoughts:
5. Blue Stilton Cheese on...anything - absolutely love Blue Stilton, but way out of my price bracket in Thailand (that is my assumption, but I've never actually priced it.
4. Jamie Oliver’s Spelt and Quinoa - no idea what it is. I guess I've lived in Thailand too long. Doesn't sound like my cup of tea.
3. A Packet of Crisps - is this a British thing? Regardless of what you call them, I thought it was a universal snack. However, Sea Salt & Aspall Cyder Vinegar crisps from Fairfield Farms - never heard of them . Something new, or wasn't I really living in the UK for well over 50 years?
2. Fish and Chips - yay, this sounds very British, but then they go and spoil it all by adding creamy tartar sauce. i've used fish and chip shops all over the UK (you don't get a name like Big Boy without putting in a little effort ). Salt and vinegar, yes, mushy peas, yes, creamy tartar sauce, never in a fish and chip shop.
1. Tea and Scones - can't disagree that this is British, but not something I'd go out of my way to find here in Thailand. Certainly not my number 1.
Of the top 5 listed above, the only one I'd go out of my way to buy here is 2. Fish and Chips.
Where is the steak and kidney pudding, bangers n' mash, roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, chicken tikka masala etc., etc.?

My Brummie friend here in Luxembourg was recently telling the locals, who appreciate fine dining in upmarket restaurants, that they have nothing to compare with a chicken balti pie as sold at Aston Villa football ground on a Saturday afternoon!

Re: The 5 most British dishes
Coincidentally I'm told I'm having steak pie and chips tonight. With a chicken curry last night and a beef stew & mash the night before, I don't miss out at all! I even get fish & chips from time to time, though I'd kill for a nice bit of plaice...

No quinoa then! ( I haven't got the slightest idea what that actually is. )dtaai-maai wrote:Coincidentally I'm told I'm having steak pie and chips tonight. I don't about a chicken balti pie, but Hua Hin Ham & Bacon do a delicious chicken curry pie - sold every day of the week .STEVE G wrote:they have nothing to compare with a chicken balti pie as sold at Aston Villa football ground on a Saturday afternoon!

Apparently quinoa is a grain similar to buckwheat (whatever that is) and the healthiest food in the world. Not for me then...

I must pay more attention!
Re: The 5 most British dishes
I was recently reading an article about a guy who tests pies for Morrison's who reckoned he'd eaten over 7,000 of them in the last ten years. I bet he doesn't eat quinoa!

What about bangers 'n mash?
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
