Wot, no tonic?
Re: Wot, no tonic?
Seems the next disruption to our gin & tonic may be the absence of limes, or a price increase. Never a day passes here without monumental problems and challenges. Pete

Man claims B300,000 of limes stolen

A man has filed a police complaint claiming limes worth 300,000 baht have been stolen from his orchard in Phu Phiang district in Nan province.
Pairoj Srithep told police there was evidence of limes having been picked from the trees in his 40-rai orchard.
Ripe limes which had fallen to the ground were also missing.
Mr Pairoj said he regularly goes to his orchard to spray fertiliser on the trees and pick the fruit. But on the last visit he discovered most of the limes were gone.
He estimated the value of the missing limes at 300,000 baht. The price of lime has surged in recent months, retailing at between 6-10 baht apiece, up from about one baht each.
Local authorities said owners of lamyai orchards in the province have begun employing security guards to watch their orchards and prevent the theft of their lamyai, which are expected to fetch high prices this year.
It has been reported some vegetable vendors have now stopped selling limes because of the steep prices.
The Commerce Ministry has said limes have become expensive partly because some traders and middlemen have hoarded the fruit to drive prices higher than usual during the summer when supplies are short.
The ministry vowed to take action against hoarders, who could face a maximum of seven years in jail.

If it's not one thing, it's the next. Some days you just want to throw in the towel.

Well, the supermarket has plenty of olives. We can always use our gin for martinis.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

I am in the US at the moment--the ScheppesTonic is awful, very little quinine taste and much too sweet.
Its rather like British Marmalade, even if it is a British brand, the version sold outside the UK is usually much too sweet. Marmalde is NOT orange jam.
Tonic Water was invented in India by the British. The quinine is to prevent Malaria--that is why it is called Tonic--its a health drink. Add a liitle lemon and you eliminate scurvy. So have a G & T, we have to take care of ourselves

Re: Wot, no tonic?
I realise this is an old thread but found myself traipsing around looking for Schweppes or any tonic water today as one of my nephews quaffed my last tin and I felt like a g+t. Local 7-11, no. Tesco express Pala U road, no. Big C, no. Ended up getting the last three cans in the fridge in Gee An Deung by the railway crossing. Macro did not have any yesterday either. Could not be bothered to check Tesco or Villa but am wondering where the best regular reliable supply of tonic water is? I don't drink a lot but do enjoy the occasional gin and having to hunt for tonic spoils the moment.
I did notice that at 15 baht a can it is the same price as mentioned three years ago though.

I've never found (over the years) 7/11 stores stocking tonic. It's not a drink popular with Thais so forget the 'tesco' supermarkets and the like. I bought a couple of dozen in Villa today and had a couple of G and T's at a couple of local restaurants tonight. No problem.

Hin Lek fai supermarket on the Pala u Rd is linked to a massive wholesaler and always has it. Also now a good range of wines, spirits and Moose cider which is my new favourite tipple at b59 a bottle.
Enjoying 'Retirement'....So many jobs to do, I don't know how I ever had time to work!

Yes, I live near there and am always well stocked, it's a major Chang distributor for the area but they have pretty much everything else as well.NOKYAI wrote:Hin Lek fai supermarket on the Pala u Rd is linked to a massive wholesaler and always has it. Never had problem with tonic, if not BigC, you will find at Tesco, if not at Makro, buy a stock of cans according to your consumption...........
Re: Wot, no tonic?
Thanks for the advice. Went to Hin Lek Fai and they had none on the shelves or in the fridges. Asked at the counter and initially was going to get a "mai mee" after telling them the shelves were empty but suddenly the other girl asked if I was looking for a case and produced one from behind the cash desk area. Should keep me going for a while but the lack of any of the shelves hopefully is just a lack of effort rather than supply.
Re: Wot, no tonic?
Indeed, no tonic here in Korat, either. My wife found a lone six-pack at The Mall. I found a few cans at the nearby Express. The big Tesco and Talat have none. Have yet to check the Korat Makro.
I suspect it's due to a production halt while they retooled the cans. A couple of months ago we experienced half a case of leaking cans that we had purchased at Makro Hua Hin. The new tins have a different printed design and seem slightly beefier.
The last time we experience a tonic shortage was when they switched to the taller but narrower cans.
Edit: Forgot to mention that the price at Express went from 12.50 for the old cans to 14.00 for the new ones. I guess we're paying for the extra aluminum.

2 packs of tonic water delivered to our bar by our supplier today as normal...my wifes say's "what shortage?" (told her to order 5/6 extra cases, supply could dry-up overnight!)..
Re: Wot, no tonic?
I bought the last six cans at our local Express this morning. "Finished" they said….
Perhaps the distributors are favoring bars and eschewing us G&T drinkers in the provinces?
