Staying safe on your computer in Thailand

Post by Johnson504 »

Hello, looking to travel to Hua Hin in the future and I was wondering what everyone suggests as far as keeping your computers and phones secure? Also, should I be worried about being able to access things like my email and such? Thanks!

Install a VPN if you need to read the Daily Mail, everything else is fine.

Can you tell me what a VPN does and how/when I can use it. Any particular download likes?

Thank you

You can read Daily Mail by googling Mail on Sunday or opening any of the sub sections like news or fashion

This is also pretty good and very safe: https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html.en

I would avoid doing any banking on smartphones while here, Thai websites and ATMs are easily hacked.

A VPN masks your location with a substitute IP address. You can use it anytime you want. Thai government has a thing about the Daily Mail, hence they block it. You can get around this with the VPN, just set your location to UK.
I use Hola, which is downloadable but also included as an extension in Chrome.........easy to use even for a beginner.

Off topic but amusing since everyone is mentioning the 'Daily Fail'.

Wikipedia editors ban 'unreliable' Daily Mail as source

Thanks for that, Ginja. I've never used a VPN but this one was installed in a minute and as you say can be switched on and off at a click! Any simpleton can use it.

Appears so:

I don't use Edge but it keeps popping-up on my Windows laptop. I'll stick with my favourite - Google Chrome.

Thanks everyone. I just know that in some countries certain sites and such are blocked, I just didn't know if this was the case or not. I mean I love watching Netflix and being connected, but I also want to travel! Anyway, as for VPN, when googling I came across this https://securethoughts.com/vpn-review/. So this would help? As for banking on smartphones, I don't plan to, but what about on my computer? Would it be best to avoid banking on my computer as well? No big deal, I will just make sure to have everything set up before I leave. Thanks everyone!

There is no issue in overseas banking on line, I have no experience of Thai banking on line and would not do it, I just do not trust the systems here.
