VCR Tape to DVD or Digital media

Post by Jack Sprat »

Dear all,
Does anyone know of a place where I can get the contents of a VCR tape saved onto a DVD or other digital media?
Thanks in advance....

^^ From 2007, might as well be ancient history :). The OP might have to do it himself. He will need a PC, a VHS player (Betamax ???) and a TV capture card or USB TV capture dongle that can take the output from the VHS tape player and cable. Seen any VHS recorder/players for sale recently?

No. the point is that there are threads in there if the OP looks. He says, "But nothing about VCR tapes sadly."

The question has been asked several times over the years. I stopped at the first example.

Many thanks hh.
I was thinking the same.
I was hoping that there may have been somewhere in Hua Hin that was set up for this..... (so that I wouldn't need to buy equipment that I'd only use once).
Looks like I'll need to go to BKK to get this done...Pantip Plaza will no doubt be a good starting point.
Thanks for the help.

Something like this: http://www.lazada.co.th/usb-easycap-vid ... 41423.html
would be a fairly cheap thing to try. Or is the tape player the problem?

Many thanks for the suggestion......490Bht is very reasonable.
As you say, just need a VCR player...I'm sure I can find someone with one of those.
Thanks BB & HH

Dear Jack Sprat,

may have a practically unused double vhs/dvd recorder/player to sell.
Need to check out the details first (by Monday).

Kind regards,

Not all VCR players have "phono" outputs (yellow plug for video signal, red and white for stereo audio) or S-video outputs. If the VCR came over from Europe and of a certain vintage it will probably have a SCART connector only. The good news is that for a few euro you can buy a SCART to phono adapter.

However, your biggest problem will be where the VHS tapes were recorded. There are still two main TV formats across the world, PAL (Europe) and NTSC (USA) that record at approximately 25 frames per second (fps) and 30 fps respectively. France had SECAM but it was always crap.

Anyway, while all modern DVD and Blu-ray players are multi-format and can play both types of disk, the same is not true of VHS players. Even early DVD players from the late 90s were format specific. It doesn't really matter these days and even less so because so much media is intended for digital distribution and all computer media players are agnostic on this score.

You could get multi-format VHS players but they were very expensive and very rare. As far as I recall, Asia-Pacific was a blend of PAL and NTSC formats and I simply don't know what format you'll find in Thailand. Having been in Pantip a few weeks ago I think it's pretty unlikely you'll find anybody who has equipment as old as VHS. If MB's player is no good for you then I recommend trying a film or TV production company (probably still in Bangkok) who may still be using VHS players to retrieve archive footage and hope your tape format matches their machine.

Be aware that the quality of VHS compared to what you are used to now will be very disappointing and the copy process from VHS to digital is likely to degrade this yet further.

Good luck!
