Hello Hua Hin Forum administrators...
I sent a PM to takiap, but it has been sitting in the 'outbox' for about 3 hours now???
As I am new to PM's, could you please tell me why this happens?

It will sit in your outbox until Takiap clicks the message. It will then move into your sent box.

Mixed success on the VCR to DVD transfer that I was looking to support Big Boy on. Having carted my trusty Panasonic VCR from my loft in the UK to Thailand (SWMBO thought I was mad!) and sourced the correct device from Lazada, I note the damn thing will not power on at all. I'm not a very competent electronics engineer but opening it up I see there is a burst capacitor, which probably has something to do with it. The device worked fine when I stored it away three years ago so I can only imagine something has gone awry in the meantime.

So, unless we have a donor VCR machine that will play BB's tape - we're back to square one. :banghead:

There are still some small electric and electronic repair shops around. Maybe one of those could help.

The 'something' there is probably the 'meantime'. Long time in storage can effectively kill wet Al capacitors, hence old equipment should be powered up regularly. I learned that from a mate collecting ancient electronic & computing stuff & junk.
The good news is that 'elcos' are used in power supply units/modules (like in your picture) and old school hobbyists/repair men likely can fix your VCR. A few weeks ago I walked around in the central area and spotted a local guy salvaging old amplifiers, sitting at a table outside of their small shop (see the map). How lucky, I had a broken electronic gizmo with me and he fixed it right away.

Another point is that old tapes (like floppy disks and leather in the tropics) are quite often mouldy and need cleaning. Any mechanically sound old VCR that can wind/rewind tapes can be utilised for that important purpose. Now Jack has the converter and shall get a VCR as well. With duplicate A/D converters and VCRs both of you got better chances.

Great info, Laser, thanks! Is that red rectangle just by the "Railway Restaurant" at the top of the night market? I was there there other evening and probably will be again so can sling the VCR (carefully) in the top-box and make my way over to see if this guy can help.

Yes, it is in that indicated area, not far (about 50 m, from memory) from the corner restaurant. It looked like an aircon repair shop. Communicating with the smaller guy is a challenge, but he knows his trade.

My friends have found a shop to do conversions here in Hua Hin. They are opposite the Esso garage in the centre of town. The cost was 500 Baht per hour of video to be converted, which sounds reasonable to me.

Have been searching for a solution to this, and found your posts. I would like to convert some old VHS tapes for my mother staying here, and saw both J.J.B. and Laser have Analogue video to Digital converters. Is it possible to borrow one of these to convert the tapes, if one is available? Or can i buy one now in Hua Hin? Time is short as leaving soon, and unfortunately delivery from internet is too late. Tried messaging JJB and Laser but doesnt seem to work- and not sure if doing it right. Just re-joined now after 10 years, maybe takes a while to PM? Many thanks
