If you want to prevent Microsoft from nagging you about upgrading to Windows 10. and if you want to prevent your PC from upgrading to Windows 7, check out this URL:
http://www.zdnet.com/article/how-to-pre ... indows-10/#
Also I know nothing about Windows 8 or 10 but up to Windows 7, After any Windows upgrade don’t neglect to run ‘Disk Cleanup’ to free up to as much as tens of gigabytes of free space.
After opening Disk Cleanup and its little box appears and it finishes scanning your system, click on ‘Cleanup System Files’ in the bottom left corner instead of just clicking OK. But be aware that this deletes the backups of system files that are left behind when you do updates & upgrades. So if there is somthing wrong with the upgrade or update you will not have the old files to go back to
If you just click OK you will get the normal bare bones cleanup.

OOoopps, that was supposed to be - if you want to prevent your PC from upgrading to Windows 10...
Re: Currently Using Win7? (plus windows update advice)
Mine did the same this morning. It is the complete update of Win 10. I read someplace where there was an option to set a time for the update for when it was convenient. Did not follow it up, but I guess Microsoft only considers the US time zones. Now to see what does not work anymore, or has been completely changed.buksida wrote:I take back my comment 7 posts up about Win 10 - twenty minutes to turn the feggin thing on because Windoze is updating again. Have one desktop on Win 7, no updates, no infections, no viruses, for at least 6 years. It is the best behaved machine of the lot, for me it is the updates that cause the problems. The Apple crowd can stick their heads back in the sand and carry on shelling out, there is a thread on here for them somewhere.Homer wrote: How long before such a machine is infected? When installing new software or a new version, how long until the installer says it can't continue until the OS is updated?

Re: Currently Using Win7? (plus windows update advice)
I have an old desktop with legal Win XP and a laptop With legal Win 7 w all updates. Both protected with ‘WinPatrol’ (BillP Studios) and ‘Malwarebytes’. Neither have ever had any type of virus or malware. Just all the other Windows exasperations that have been plentiful for me all the way from Windows 3.0 thru Win 95, Win ME, Vista, etc
My Macs have never caused any “shelling out” except for the high purchase price. But almost all apps that will ever be needed are included and all updates and upgrades are free. Which Microsoft had too doo too with Win 10 because of their unfortunate big and long string of embarrassments. And to “carry on shelling out” is a given because the new policy is that they will be renting Win 10 and renting, not selling, the office suites. If you have any old Win 7 or even XP install discs hang on to them.

I've been using win 7 for several yrs. when I turned off the updates I stopped having problems.
Re: Currently Using Win7? (plus windows update advice)
Win 7 (or any version) without security updates for years? That's like never wearing a seat belt because you've never been in an accident.

The updates cause more problems than they 'fix'.

I used to use the updates regularly, but they kept crashing my machine. The only way to keep it working was to switch updates off. I might be driving without a seat belt, but at least I'm driving.

Re: Currently Using Win7? (plus windows update advice)
Y'all say updates cause problems. Of course they do, just look at who created them and what they're being applied to. But what kind of updates? Did you know there are 3 types? Every try turning off autoupdate, then applying only the security updates?
With autoupdate off, one can wait a few weeks, search the net* for reports of problems with specific updates, then decide when it's safe to install. I haven't had a problem caused by an update since adopting that strategy, which also includes never installing optional updates. They're the buggiest of the 3 types.
* Or visit askwoody.com. He's been reporting on the reliability of windows updates since 2004.

Good strategy advice Homer. I also noticed that a lot of seemingly innocent updates were rejected after installing the program to block nagging & pop ups & sneaky installs for Win 10
