AIS SIM card and phone being stopped.

Post by Riversider »

Anyone else having problems over this? Have been told by AIS staff in MV that my phone will no longer work from Tuesday. My phone only supports 2G and AIS are switching to 3G. I have been told to go to another provider who will keep my number and allow me to use my phone. If My SIM card was over 4 months they would have given me a new phone but as I got it in Jan this doesn't apply.

Yes, I had this with my SIM from AIS that is around 4 years old. It was not 3G, as I don't use the data, and stopped working towards the end of last year. AIS told me I needed to upgrade to a 3G SIM, which I did, and I was also able to keep the same number. Apparently they are deactivating their 2G service. The process was not so straight-forward and took a few days to reactivate but all is well now.

I think you may need to look at eithe a new phone or a new provider and hopefully you will be able to take your old number with you, if that's important to you.

This happened to me a few months ago. I got a few messages in Thai for a period of about 4 weeks, which I ignored. Then, on the day of the axing, they finally learned how to write in English and told me that my number would be lost forever if I didn't go and see an AIS representative that very day. This was about 4 in the afternoon and I was extremely hungover but I managed to get to Market Village AIS where I was then told to sit and wait. After waiting for about half an hour a lady came out, threw my ticket in the bin and said she was personally going to take care ("special service for you"). This was the first time I had the opportunity to ask why this was occurring and I was told that they were transferring to a new system (the transfer from 2G... but they never mentioned that - I had to work it out by myself).

It was extra confusing because it happened just about a month or two after the "register your sim card or be cut off" cut-off. So I actually assumed that somebody had just failed to register my SIM card correctly when I'd gone in to do that registration.

Has to do with the bandwidth auction and AIS couldn't secure the 900 MHz slot. Now held by DTAC and True. Have changed service providers because of this.

Have now changed to new supplier DTAC who seem to be fine. Had to change number though as AIS couldn't tell me how long it would take to complete the change and I didn't want to keep going back in to check. DTAC also put my contact list onto new SIM card.

A little while ago I had the instruction to visit AIS to avoid losing my number in the future. Did so and it took around 15 mins for a new sim card and it was done. They told me that all the info from my old sim had been transferred. Considering there were a lot of people there for the same reason, they were very helpful, efficient and informative.

Carefully if you use "AI#" sim card for internet data. Better Register for packets 15 baht 24 hrs use. If you not register than you money will drop empty very fast. :)
