SIM card with a years validity.

Post by Riversider »

As you have to register SIM cards now, to save me registering every year are there any SIM cards that last for a year. Previous cards I have used only last for a couple of months. Is there any minimum amount you have to buy to get the year.

No, that's changed. When I registered a AIS SIM a few weeks ago, it only gave me 3 months validity.

My wife had AIS for a couple of years, (mainly incoming calls). She used to get as ste860 states, but the last time I topped it up, she received a couple of months validity.

It seems to me that they are making people top up regularly, or lose the service - even if they have credit. I'd love to be proved wrong on this one BTW because it will be costing me money on my wife's phone and on my tablet - or at least I'll have the nausea of topping up to extend validity and then transferring credit to a phone that needs it.

You can add validity for a small amount. AIS: *500*9#, True *934#. Dtec maybe too

That sounds about right - we gave a small phone to our son and put a few hundred baht on it. He never uses the thing so after a couple of months the number was deactivated, I topped up to 500 baht and now we have until December 12th to use the credit before the number gets deactivated again - utterly ludicrous.

For AIS *121# will tell you how much you've got left and, more importantly, how long you have before they cut you off (regardless of your credit).

I guess that it all depends on just how long you have had the SIM. I have had the same one for around 10 years, and each tome that I top it up it reports valid for 1 year. The same when I registered it a few months ago, nothing changed.

Maybe - my wife has only had her SIM for 3.5 years.

I've just checked my AIS card, which I have to top up monthly anyway for Internet services. This card is the same vintage as my wife's. Yes, in the beginning I was given 1 year's credit, and because I top up monthly, my current expiry date is 10/16. Because my wife's phone is predominantly incoming only, her 1 year has gradually dwindled.

You will find that if you top up with the machine outside AIS in Market Village you can cheat the system. What you must do is put on only 20 Baht and you will get one month and then a further 20 Baht and get an additional month and so on until you get the amount of months that you require. I have done this but so far only taken it to 6 months in advance. Good luck.

With dtac you might be able to extend the validity of the SIM-card by dialing

*113*number of days you need 30, 90, 180*9#

That is for 180 days, *113*180*9#

Last time I used this service the fee was:

30 Days 2 Baht
90 Days 6 Baht
180 Days 12 Baht

The rather confusing name of this service is "Day Give-Away Service". I'm not sure if this service is available with every kind of SIM-card.

More information can be found here:

http://www.dtac.co.th/en/prepaid/servic ... umber.html

I have also succeeded to extend the validity for a small fee by mailing dtac customer service.

You need to have had the SIM card for a minimum amount of time before you can extend the validity, not sure how long that is.

If you can find an AIS 12Call NET Sim, these have a year's validity but that's dependent on you subscribing to a monthly package, the cheapest one being 3 hours 30bt. I did run my sim card for a couple of months with not enough credit on to afford the renewal and I just got a message saying that the package couldn't be activated - no threat of cancelling the SIM or credit validity. Not sure if you could get away with doing that for a whole year or not, though!

I recently had to re-register my SIM card due to Government regulations. My 10 year old SIM was replaced by a new 4g one. After registration I discovered my balance was only valid for 2 months. I can confirm that if you are on AIS network you can use the ATM type machine at the shop in Market Village and put 12 x 20 baht top ups to increase the expiry date to 1 year.

I've just had to update my 14 year old sim to 3 or 4G. Did this at the AIS shop today in Market Village. She told me that it takes 3 or 4 days to process and when the network goes dead, then put in the new SIM. She assured me that existing credit and my contacts are on the new SIM as well as the 1 year expiry. She did say that if that's not the case, then go back and it'll be sorted. I'll let you know if that is true.

I went through this yesterday. Why it takes 3 or 4 days to process, only Buddha knows.

Countdown to 900MHz SIM blackout

The existing 1 million mobile phone users on the 900-megahertz band can continue using the service until the 900MHz licences are granted to the two new operators in 90 days.

http://www.bangkokpost.com/business/tel ... m-blackout

I have tried that *727*#, but it comes back as "invalid request". Probably the same programmer that does the 90 day immigration BS!

Did you put your mobile number between the second star and the hash? *727*[mobile number]#

Just a quick note if you are changing your SIM card, when you change SIM's you will LOSE ALL contacts/SMS etc that you had on the old SIM, you need to make sure you store ALL your contacts on your phone not your SIM, so when you change SIM cards, your contacts are retained.
