3BB Deploying Carrier Grade NAT (CGN)

Post by Ratsima »

Maybe this is old news, but I only found out when I suddenly became unable to SSH back into my home machine.

I suppose 3BB has run out of IPv4 addresses so, instead of doing the right thing (deploy IPv6), they are using CGN instead.

Unfortunately, CGN IP addresses are not publicly routable, so there's no easy way to get back to your own LAN from outside the network. I know this is meaningless for most users, but for those of us who need to get into our home networks from outside it is important. (Or, maybe you have an IP security camera you'd like to look at....)

I called 3BB without much hope, but I eventually spoke to a very nice network engineer who understood the problem and promised that I would never again be assigned a CGN IP address.

We'll see, but for the time being, I'm back in business.

Anyway, my faith is somewhat restored....

Thanks for the heads up.... My IP cameras are working fine, but if something goes sideways I will now have an idea...I have their fiber offering since March and so far all is good....
