iPhone Vs Galaxy

Post by kendo »

Since the invention of smart phones I have always used Apple IPhones but after so many people taking a disliking to Apple products I have decided to take the plunge into Android phones.
I have ordered a couple of Samsung Galaxy 5's for me and the Mrs.
Reading a review there's very little to say an IPhone 6 is better than the Samsung Galaxy 5 and the Galaxy is half the cost of an IPhone.

Has anyone else taken the switch to Android.

Considering it.

I bought my first Apple product in 2006 (MacBook - the brother in law still uses it to this day). It's fair to say that I won't switch back to a windows driven computer again.

However since owning IPhones for the last 5 years or so I'm not as turned on by what I get for my money.

Currently using an iPhone 5 and need to upgrade as each software update seems to screwed with functionality. I'm very reluctant to buy an iPhone 6 for a couple of reasons, one being the design of the handset.

Although it goes against what I've always said, I may just try a Galaxy driven phone for a couple of years to decide which is best suited for my usage.

I'd be interested to hear what you think of the change.

If you want an amazing phone with a superb camera get the Sony Z3 compact it is the same size as a i-phone . It has amazing battery life, a fantastic 20 mp camera that shoots like a real camera. It has a dedicated camera button that you push down and it starts the camera without unlocking the phone. We have had it a week and it is super impressive so far. My wife leaves at 07:00 to take the kids to school and this afternoon at 16:00 the phone still has 68% battery. Oh and it is waterproof too.

if your not fussed about brand labels then a Chinese clone offers very good value.
As always there are good fakes and bad fakes.

I paid 5000 baht for a fake S5 from MBK, it was crap and felt cheap.

I then paid 10'000 baht for a really good note 3 copy,
Its the best phone I have ever had.

The Long Haired General has had an iPhone for several years, whereas I have used a Samsung Galaxy - the latter IMHO being the far better.

I have the S3 and am more than happy with all functions - zero need to upgrade to the S5 or 6 or whatever it is now. The LHG on the other hand has the latest version of the Banana...... still not as good as the Galaxy.

Better Apps - the majority of which are free, better camera...... and a battery you can actually remove!!

I'm still running on the S2, and no need to replace it at all. Friends and family have the much cheaper Ace3, and functionality seems very comparable.

I don't generally need all of the whistles and bells, but it's nice to know they're there if I need them. Main extras I use are Speed test, Wi-fi hotspot and Navigator. Certainly nothing I need to downgrade to an iPhone for.

^ OK, so where is the Banana iPhone superior to the Samsung? After several years of a direct comparison, I'm at a loss to see where.

The missus has an older Iphone and I have the same release year of the Galaxy (SII). I've used them both and I think the Galaxy is far superior in every way except the build quality (cheaper plastic casing).
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

The only advantage I see in owning i-phones is the vast amount of accessories available for them. Until this year Apple only made 1 model (fit) so it was easy for 3rd party manufactures to make accessories. Android only suffers from too much variety which is awesome, Android is easy to use and not so restrictive like i-tunes (damn I hate loading stuff onto my kid's I-pads, will take Android drag and drop any day). Plus the phones are available with removable batteries and memory cards. Lets face it a i-phone with 128 mb card is 32000 Baht. A higher spec Android with a 128 mb card installed is 10 000 Baht less. For women who like accessorizing I-phone is better because there are 1000's of cutie cases for them.

For me it's the ecosystem that surrounds the device. I run Macs at home with an apple router and a number of Apple TVs and the iPhone 'just works'. There is a lot to be said for having the same company making all of the accessories - or at least licensing their manufacture - compared with the free and open world of Android.

A number of years ago I struggled with various bits of technology (mainly bluetooth) that simply wouldn't work together and got fed-up with manufacturers including Sony and Nokia telling me that I shouldn't expect their gadget to be compatible with something else due to different chipsets and firmware versions etc. I'm an end-user, a typical dumb consumer that doesn't 'jailbreak' stuff or solder bits together and I want a simple life, which Apple largely provides and expects you to pay for.

If all you want is a phone that connects to the net and gets your email then any model should do. If you want to use it as the command centre for your smart home (lights, audio-visual, security, thermostat etc.) then you may want to go for something designed to be end-to-end like the iPhone.

Apple nay-sayers will berate me for the above and I'm sure that technologically there are myriad arguments as to why it's all puff and publicity and that I'm a mug to pay their exorbitant prices. That said, it's my money to spend as I please and nobody's business to tell me otherwise, especially when it works just as I want.

**Update on the Sony Z3 compact battery - @ 30 hours since the last charge the phone is now at 49% battery. I don't know what Sony has done but their claim of 2 days of battery life seem to hold true. This is with wifi and 3G on and many social media active synchronizing also my son playing a game for 20 mins.

Well first impressions of our new Samsung Galaxy S5's is good.
I have been working nights so have only just started to set mine and the wife's new toys up.

At first i thought christ what have i done purchasing such a large phone, but been carrying it around as usual in my jeans front pocket. I thought at first it would be like walking around with a skateboard in my pocket but it weighs a lot less and is thinner so's stays upright and to my surprise is a lot less noticeable when walking around driving and working than my Iphone that used to turn on its side in my pocket.

So far i have been a little frazzled getting to grips with the Android operating system but i'm really starting to make sense of it now a few findings so far that i can say are "bang on" are

The Voice commands

OK Google and Hi Samsung, the first for internet browsing and the second to ask your handset to do many actions works really well and far superior to Iphone's Siri that never works properly with very low background noise.

Battery Life

Running loads of apps and location services doesn't cane the battery like an Iphone as there is many power saving options and it has a proper removable battery.

Operating Speed

The S5 is lightning fast it's incredible compared to my Iphone 4

More from me later as i get to grips with it, i have always loved Apple products is this someone that is quite set in his ways on the road to being converted we will see!
