Battery Backup
Battery Backup
Hi guys.
I'm so fed up of the unstable supply of electricity, that sooner or later will kill my computer.
Sometimes it's just a 1 second drop of power, but that is enough to bring all computers to a halt.
I need a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) to have a normal shut down.
Any idea of the costs?
Is a 500VA good enough?
Any GOOD shop?

I intend to live forever - so far so good.
A 500VA will be enough for one machine, don't plug the monitor into it too though.
There are no "good" computer shops in Hua Hin but you can buy them in the one next to Thai Farmers bank, should cost around 1,800 baht.
I suggest you get the whole lot grounded properly, this will stabilize both the power supply and the phone line and may even improve your internet connection.

Hi and thank you Buksida.
I went there and bought PowerChamp SC-600VA / 360W.
Price 2100Bt but got it for 2000.-
Should be able to support both the pc and my LCD monitor for a normal shut down.
Will have a look at the grounding topic next month.
This is, (I believe), a quite common and neglected problem by many constructers of houses in Hua Hin.

Although I find this topic interesting, I am not an electrician.
As I understand it, do you mean that you plug your computer in to the generator for normal daily use, or just use it for back up.
Mind you as my dear wife has just pointed out, I will be using a laptop, with battery back up, so this problem should not effect me.

Hi there Limey.
You're quite right that your laptop doesen't need any UPS, because you already have one fitted. (The batterypack in the laptops are in fact a UPS).
A standard desk computer need this only if you have problems with your normal 220-240V electricity supply, and we do experience that in Hua Hin.
A UPS is in basic a 12V battery pack you plug into a 220-240V wall outlet.
Then you plug your desktop computer into the other end. (Still 220-240V)
If the voltage suddenly drops, your computer will momentary shut down.
Using a UPS will prevent your computer to shut down.
Your UPS will take control and invert its 12V battery power to 220V AC which will give you time enough for a normal shut down of your computer.

Forum dwellers to the rescue!
I'm reviving this ten year old thread because it's all I could find that seems relevant and didn't see the need to start a new one. Can anyone recommend a shop in Hua Hin that would sell something like this? I bought this one from a shop half way to Petchburi nearly four years ago and figure there must be something similar closer to home.
Please note it is not a moped battery, it's designed to fit in an access control panel so can't be much bigger than this. Also, please note the connectors are push-on, crimp-type connectors. The eagle-eyed among you will see one of the connectors (the -ve) is missing; it rotted away.
Dimensions are: 150mm long, 95mm high and 65mm wide. Many thanks!

Re: Battery Backup
The shops that sell and install alarm systems, and automatic gates, use them, so probably also sell the batteries.

Re: Battery Backup
Thanks for the responses, I'll try the CCTV shop at the crossroads near the station and then work my way further out of town. I appreciate the help.

Re: Battery Backup
I bought that exact battery a couple of times at HomePro (for our home alarm system)
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
Re: Battery Backup
Amazingly (for me, at least) HomePro did have a similar battery so all is good. Thanks HHFarang!
