The Android Thread

Post by BaaBaa. »

Essential Apps:

Applanet (Black market Android market, a bit glitchy but you can get free paid for Apps and games from here)
Juice Defender Ultimate: Customise your Battery usage.
Anti Virus Free
Beautiful Widgets
Fancy Widget Pro
DropBox
Mybackup
3G Watchdog
aTrackDog (Looks out for updates if you've got apps that aren't from the market)
Cover Art Downloader (Puts Album Artwork on music files)
Flashlight (A Torch with other random features)
Google Sky Map (A GPS mapped look at the stars)
Amazon Kindle
Zedge (Cool ringtones and Wallpapers)
TV Thailand (Streamed Thai TV for the Missus)
TVShowStreams (Best App I've got, £3, has every episode of every TV show available if you've got wifi connection, from ThunderCats to Sopranos, The Office to The Wire. :) Awesome. I'd guess it has every episode of 400 TV shows.
Phone my PC (Remotely control your PC from anywhere via your phone screen :naughty: )

Games:

All the Angry Birds (Free)
Contract Killer (Free)
Modern Combat 2:Black Pegasus (Call of Duty on your phone, play against 9 other people online, stupidly good and seamless)

Dolphin HD is worth checking out as a browser, it's very similar to Firefox but Mozilla are still messing about with their mobile browser, it hasn't even got flash yet.

I'm happy with the stock Gingerbread browser but Dolphin HD has tabs and addons like FF.

If you are in to boating the Navionics charts are great and a fraction of the cost for a normal boat chart plotter cartridge

If you can get the US apps you may need to root your device using z4root and use market enabler

A new version of Android Market is available before the official release, it looks much nicer.

http://www.theandroidsoul.com/downloadi ... -v-3-0-26/

Follow the download link on this site and download the top one. You don't need to use a file manager as he suggests though, once it's downloaded just install it directly from the notification menu. All done in less than 2 minutes. 8)

SJ asked about Antivirus.

I've been messing about with the new market and found one that actually seems like it's doing something.

It's called ALYac and it's free.

You've had it a couple of days now SJ, what's your opinion coming from ios to Android and the Galaxy S2 in general?

Rapid innit? :thumb:

Ps: did you know to hold down the homekey to flick between the last 6 thing you've done? Aka multitasking?

Yeah, absolute quality really. Everytime I think I got a main 'function' set up just right (ie: email, camera, music, internet etc), I accidentally touch something when about to exit and 25,000 more options to tailor it pops up, I could retire on this phone and still fill 40 hours a week :D

There's a couple of things I prefer on ios but there's no comparison, and they aren't things this won't do, just a different format that will take a short time to adjust to. Funnily enough I've started noticing a fair few iPhone/ios based apps, like their keyboard which I'm using. They've got taller letters than this standard keyboard and I kept touching the wrong letter. The oly thing I'm struggling with a bit is moving around/scrolling up and down while typing, ie: when quoting a long post on HHAD I can't seem to scroll down the text beyond what is on view in the open box. But I'll work it out, it's fine for emailing, texting etc. But for 1 or 2 things there's 10 or 20 improvements. Just searched for the post when I bought the useless Samsung Omnia (supposedly the first real iPhone 'killer'), it was Aug '08 and was hopeless, they've come a million miles since then and strangely Apple haven't moved it on much that I can see.

I can't contribute much to any Android new apps yet as still busy with other stuff. One thing do I really need the 'fixed' contacts app at the bottom of the home page, everything in it seems to be in the 'phone' app next to it? I did read somewhere you can move them out and put others in but I couldn't work it out then got distracted. I'd really want the email app in there.

My 2,500 songs (Oasis' greatest hits + 2,485 Hed Kandi tracks) all sound miles better on it too :D

SJ

EDIT: My son likes the 'photofun' app...

Right, to swap the docks go to the app screen, press menu and edit, just drag the email application over the contacts app and you're done.

Totally agree on the writing on forums part, if you mess up it can be a pain in the ass to edit, there's apps such as tapatalk that are supposed to be good but the forum needs to be compatible, I haven't tried it yet.

Try the SwiftKey X trial for your keyboard, it's a bit different but I love it now.

I know what you meen about it being a time filler, I've had mine for 2 months and never put it down, just don't buy Order and Chaos.

Cheers for that photofun, I'll have a look.

Did you download the new market above?

Have a look at Noled SJ.

It makes up for having no physical lights for notifications.

You can pinch out on the Calendar app to see the whole year, just another little trick I found. :naughty:

Gingerbread 2.3.4 should be available via Kies in a matter of weeks.

Another cool new app I've found: Software Data Cable, No need to plug in your phone for data transfers, it just shares the WIFI.

I am looking around for a new phone. Have decided pretty much I am going to make the switch from my Nokia N95 which I have had for some time and it just about kaput to an android.

I reckon I will go for either the new Motorola Defy+ that will come out soon, hopefully for around 10,000 B the same as the Defy. It is pretty much water proof apparently and a good rugged phone. Or I may go for the Samsung Galaxy S II, apparently a best of class phone, although it has been around a while now. Was a bit spooked to read somewhere that sometimes the 3G receivers of some of the android phones are not really top notch for some 3g frequencies even if the phone does nominally do the frequency. The sII apparently has a good receiver for all frequencies, I believe it is a 'pentaband' phone that covers all your possible bases for 3g.

Is there anywhere in HH I can get a hands on with some of these phones, the Defy and the SII particularly?
