Nereus wrote:I voted "no "to the question, as those so inclined can do so on the many so called "social media" that caters for such rubbish.
However, on a motoring forum that I use they have a button for thanking a poster for a "useful post". This is intended, and used, when a poster post some information that is of use to other people. It also helps keep away some of the irrelevant junk that can otherwise clog up a forum.
Just my 2 Baht's worth, and it would only probably be used occasionally on this forum!
That was the general idea as it is being used in your motoring forum.
Re: Suggestion: Like Button?
If it did come to pass that buttons were installed, there should also be a "Don't Like" or "Hate It" or an exploding nuclear bomb button as well.

Re: Suggestion: Like Button?
I just noticed a lot of different titles in profiles here like 'Guru' or 'Hero'. I'm assuming these are rewards for posting? Could that also be considered a Ego thing?VincentD wrote:I'm with VS. Besides,we don't need that kind of stat (my ego/thingamajig/whatcamacallit is bigger than yours).
You like it, add a post. You don't like it, put in your tuppence worth.
Another useless button eating up bandwidth. Bah.
Re: Suggestion: Like Button?
Have not really noticed but will assume they're related to the number of posts? Not that I bother as I've been on the board since 2002 and seldom post anyway.
Only post if I think it would be useful.
Note: Given that the membership here is quite small compared to other sites, so we really need that button?

Re: Suggestion: Like Button?
A like button is OK if enough people think it's a good idea as it would also give some of the passive readers that might not really want to get too deeply involved an option to contribute/express themselves.....even if just in a minor way.
However, a dislike button is a bad idea and many sites don't have one for the explicit reason that it can be used to troll people. A like button will only be used by those who want to genuinely recognise a post as good.....a dislike button is open to way too much abuse. You would also have to limit the number of times a post can be liked to 1 by each IP address to keep some semblance of reality in it all.
But, a like button might be OK and popular with the average person/visitor (not a prolific poster type) that browses the forum and may give you (admin) access to more interaction data from visitors. If you made it so that the function can't be abused and used to troll...then why not?
Fine with me. Maybe a possible way to evolve and appeal to more people.....I no expert though, just giving my 2 bahts worth.

Re: Suggestion: Like Button?
Tend to agree with Nereus. I don't think that a like button would do very much to improve what we have now.
The like or dislike button is an incentive to write something you know others will like instinctively or vice versa if you're a troll.
Don't encourage either
Like and dislike also avoids the need to respond directly and be identified with your opinion. We are not a FB platform but are a forum where even in anonymity your views can be identified and associated with you (your online identity).... That's in my opinion one of the great things of a forum.

Re: Suggestion: Like Button?
A "Like" button is not just a facebook thing it is also used on many forums and there is actually a discussion on phpBB (which is the software that runs this forum) about possibly integrating a "Like" feature into version 3.2.

let's not turn this forum into a popularity contest. if you have a comment submit it. if not read and move on.

I think the poll results say it all - there is enough digital pollution on Farcebook already, don't think we need any more.
