Re: Why bother making suggestions?

Please look at the original thread where I posted screen shots and the size of the text if I follow your advce.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Just tried increasing the text size on my pc and sure enough, the adverts on the right encroach on the text pane. So I guess it is down to text size.

^ yes and if I (and many others who have complained) reduce the text size to the point that it doesn't go behind the ads it it so small it is not readable! AGAIN, WHY ONLY IN PRIVATE MESSAGES!!!!

hhfarang wrote:Big Boy, I know you are a good person and mean well, but what you suggested (if I'm not mistaken) just makes the text smaller, and as I wrote on the other thread, if I do that the text is too small to read.

Again, WHY DOES THIS ONLY HAPPEN IN PRIVATE MESSAGES AND NOT ON THE REGULAR FORUM? That indicates a forum problem, not a screen resolution or text size problem...!
Please don't take this the wrong way HHF, and this is me, not a Moderator speaking. However, this is hard to say without it sounding condescending.

You can't keep all of the people happy all of the time. Are you really getting upset because your eyesight is failing? Have you considered a larger screen/special glasses?

When I was working in IT, we used to make sure that our kit/software was acceptable to at least 80% of the user community. The rest were dealt with as special cases, which included larger screens, magnifiers etc. I myself was given special glasses. Obviously the forum can not go to this expense when we're providing a free service.

I'm sorry, but I can not help you as I am not part of the technical team here at the forum. I'm sure one of the technical team will pick up on your problem. They will hopefully advise if a solution is possible without a major re-write of the 'off the shelf' software.

Again, did you read the other original thread I referred to. It's not just me. Believe me, If I use your solution you couldn't read the text either because it is this size aaaabbbbccccc

My close vision is perfect. I only wear glasses for distance.

BTW, I retired from IT after 35 years, the last 20 with Siemens, so I'm not the normal computer idiot either.

I know what you're saying, and I too have been personally affected by similar problems at work. The optician fixed it for me.

Again this is a known problem with ALL 'of the shelf' software. It will never be an exact fit, and not everybody can be kept happy unless huge sums of money are thrown at it, resulting in bespoke software, which defeats the object. Whether or not a cheap solution is possible will have to be a decision by the Technical team.

Ok, I understand what you're saying, but, being a sw engineer myself I still don't understand why this only happens with private messages and not on the regular forum which has the same ads at the right.
Can you explain that?

I can guess, but not be certain.

If you look at the PM screen there is an awful lot more to fit in, and the message box size appears smaller. However, we need one of our boffins to answer for definite.

So, it's a forum problem or so many people wouldn't experience it. Do a poll. You guys should be able to fix it... your forum support people.... or are you like the other web pages that have support in India and don't really care about your customers or members in this case? :D

Sorry, but I've taken too much shit for too long from too many people so I'm pushing on this.

Its not a forum problem, it is a screen resolution/text zoom problem. We cant change the entire layout of the website for one member that has a non-standard browser configuration.

It works perfectly on standard screen resolutions on standard monitors - I have been using it since its inception on countless different computers using countless different operating systems and cannot replicate YOUR problem (cant see anyone else complaining apart from those using iPads).

To test it on my 23" screen using Windows 7 I've just opened the PM window on standard and zoomed all the way in and there is still no problem. However the side-bar is a third party add-on which may cause issues with ten year old screens such as old 15"-17" box monitors with zoomed fonts.

Yes we know there are issues on iPads - but thousands of websites have issues with Apple because their software wants to use its own standards, not the ones the rest of the planet uses.

Edit: give us the following info and we'll try to replicate the problem:
Browser brand and version
Zoom level (if any)
Monitor spec and size
Graphics card spec
Screen resolution
Operating system

Just tested on my iMac and my powerbook. Works fine BUT if I try to enlarge the text even one step the ads cover the right side of the text which means I could not use the PM function on my smartphone. Not a a text size issue the ads simply lay over it if I try to enlarge. General posts and PM's are only affected whilst you are composing them NOT existing posts which resize automatically as normal. That's my systems anyway. Others may be different.

Same on Apple:

If you have a mouse with a wheel, keeping the Ctrl key depressed, rotate the wheel until desireable screen size

as well as mentioned above:

Hold the "command" key down and use the "-" to reduce and "+" to expand the screen size.

I'll repeat what I've already said. I can create the problem by 'zooming'. Back to standard 100% and it's fine. I'd love to see this problem on another computer. As I've said, I have 3 computers all running different versions of windows...... xp, windows 7 and windows 8. One of them is very old but still no problem.

Confused :?
