Forum being attacked by spam bots

Post by Gregjam »

I wish the admin well in sorting out whatever or whoever is attacking the forum with these weird posts. Cannot understand what they get out of it. I will hang in there and wait for it to be sorted out.

If you are quick and get to see it before it is deleted, here is such a spam-posting. And yes, I have reported it.

This is not an unusual occurrence - we deal with many such posts each day. However, we are a bit slow on occassion. I've zapped 3 such posts in the last 10 minutes, and the culprits havebeen banned,

I read something by a new member, it did not make any sense at all. They posted 3 posts, all were deleted about 10 mins later. It was totally nuts what the content was, as if written by some nutter :?

Most forums/companies/institutions that are on the web are constantly under attack from spammers and the general failure of an excuse for an existence type of person that wastes space.......goes with the territory, I guess.

I also experienced that some when I was running a popular forum in Norway some years ago.

As this site, we were running phpBB and ended up installing a modification that gave you a another step to go through during registration.

I believe the one we ended up using was that you had to select a specific picture that fitted a certain text that was displayed. That took care of all automated bots.

Then we were only stuck with those people in India or Bangladesh or China who got paid a few cent per posting of a spam message...

Increasingly....every fool worldwide has access to the net, and if the above post is so, then being a moderator on a forum these days must be a hugely depressing experience where your view of the average fellow person must just get dimmer and dimmer.....not to mention reading every damned crappy trolling post, must make your heads hurt.

A tidal wave of spam from India and other places driven by people that want a few cents for annoying forums around the world really says how pathetic and desperate so many can be......a somewhat pathetic reflection of the general populace of the world and their greed/apathy etc.
