On another thread some time ago we had a discussion whether or not good grammar and spelling was important, I argued that we as English speakers should try to be as correct as possible or our language would evolve into textspeak.
Steve G, your Cornwall pub story reminded me of an Australian relative who ventured into a Cornish pub and asked for scrumpy, the landlord told him, in an unfriendly way, that this was Cornwall and he didn`t sell scrumpy as it was a Devon drink. Baz pointed out that he sold Fosters but he wasn`t in f ing Australia either. He took his business elsewhere.

For a while I was based near Helston with the Navy which is between Penzance and Falmouth and is deepest Cornwall, and they’re practically a different race down there.
To them Devon is a foreign country and it was common to meet people who had never even ventured as far as London.
You could hear them talking about visiting Exeter in the sort of awestruck voices that others would reserve for destinations like Rio de Janeiro or Sydney!

Funny you should say that Steve. Coming from Plymouth, I've always said that civilization starts about 2 hours away when you get to Bristol. RNAS Culdrose must at least 2 hours further away!
It would take those people as long to get Exeter, as it would take most people to get to the other side of Europe, or even America.

Even with the 'improved' road BB? Haven't been down their for years but used to drive from Hull overnight. Get to Bristol at dawn, and know deep in your gut that it would take as long again to reach Newquay. On a good day!

Oh dear! I'd like to be able to say that was a deliberate mistake. Sadly it wasn't. Hands up - absolutely no excuse.

I'm from Cornwall, St Buryan, about six miles from Lands End.
It's not quite the end of the World, but you can see it from there.
Apart from having 2 heads and 3 bums, I'm no different to anyone else.
My problem is punctuation, I just mix up where the commas should be.
Comes from years of having my letters typed for me and being lazy.
I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.
