Good Barber / Hairdresser

Post by fabman » Tue Apr 17, 2018 1:29 pm

Can anyone recommend a decent Barber / Hairdresser in Hua Hin ?

I have yet to find any really good at giving a decent haircut ( despite living here for a good while )

Most don't speak English and are not properly qualified.

I have been to the Philippines a few times and always had a good haircut there, so i don't understand why here it is so difficult to find a good Barber here.

Recommendations please :duck:

I have used several locations over the years.
For the last 18 months i am using a shop in Chomsin Road, come over the railway line, heading towards the traffic lights.
The shop is about 5 doors down on the left, fairly dilapidated, old guy and young girl cutting hair, good air-con within the shop, limited english.
Have always had the old guy cut my hair,,,,,,,,,,,,,nothing fancy, clippers, thinning scissors, and very capable with a razor at the end.
A cold compress,nose hairs/ear hairs/eyebrows,,,,,,,,,,,,if any of that is applicable,anywhere between 70-100 baht.
My hair grows quickly, and is very thick,so i am not personally too worried about the outcome when i venture inside, but on the occasions i have used the old guy,,,,,,,,,,not a complaint.

Previously, I've had good haircuts with Malay barbers (in Singapore and Malaysia), but struggle to find the right cut here. Also, good cuts with ‘Arab barbers’ in the Arab world – if you like short hair.

I tried a lady hairdresser in Soi 94 – not good – confirmed my long held belief that woman are not good at cutting short hair.
I’ve settled on one barber near where I stay.
He spends a lot of time on back and sides with electric clippers, but does the top and front quickly, again with electric clippers.
Last time I asked him to cut the top and front using scissors – he wasn’t happy about this - “mai dee”, yet in just about every other country they put the electric clippers down and do top and front with scissors.

One problem is communication and as you mention - qualification. I see my barber receiving his degree (photo on wall) from someone in the royal family – don’t think it was for hairdressing.

I did try 2 barbers in centre of town where there are about 10 barbers shops bunched together but they both seemed to race against the clock – didn’t seem worth the trip back there.

Look forward to a recommendation for a better barber.

I use a booth run by a couple of guys in the basement at Bluport, near the gold shops. I watch TV whist they do their thing and have always been really pleased with the outcome. 120 baht. My first ever hair cut in Thailand, however, looked like this - by a lady in Korat who otherwise works as a hairdresser in Belgium!!! I could have cried! :(

When I went for my first haircut at a local Chinese barber shop in BKK I was told by the person directing me to it that I would almost certainly be offered sex. The young lady washed my hair before cutting, cut it whilst wet and then came close to me and asked--You want blow? I was confused, not sure what to say.

Cheers guys, I think a lot of Thai guys seem to have rounded hair cuts, certainly compared to the western / philipinos guys hair styles.

I will give the reccomended ones a go :-)

Not a barber, but a ladies hairdresser - allegedly. Do they have specsavers in Belgium?

Today, I tried the Bluport barbers shop in the basement (as recommended by caller).
Two barbers at work, waited about 2 minutes.
Got a good haircut for 120 baht.
He used electric clippers on side and back - seemed to have about 4 different sizes charged ready on one side.
Then he cut the top with scissors which I like i.e. he did not sculpture or cherry pick the top with comb and clippers.
Will go back again - best haircut I have had in HH.

I *think* they have them in Belgium, we definitely have them here in the Netherlands

All these positive reports have convinced my husband he is safe enough to try out the Bluport basement barbers next week (thank god, I don't like the wooly mammoth look.... and the soi 94 look he got last year for the princely sum of 250 baht was kinda like your photo earlier)

Finding a good barber anywhere in Thailand is like finding gold. Hang on to them! The problem often is that you go back to the shop at a point in time and they have left for greener pastures. :banghead: Pete

Would these Blueport barbers understand how I want my hair?.. or are they like so many here that may as well be androids?...doing the same 'short, back & sides' day-in, day-out.
My problem is getting the hairdresser to under stand my Thai/English on the matter of NOT cutting any of my long hair off..! & NOT shaving round my ears also (if I want two white arcs above my ears I'll stick some masking tape there).
Or I come out of the salon half an hour later & the lady has taken sod all off..I have indeed before now walked down the Soi & in to the very next hairdressers & sat down & gone thru' the process again..
..Never had much luck with haircuts here.

A good thing to do is take a photo of your haircut right after you get a good one that you like. All sides if possible. Keep it on your cell phone and show it to the barber each time you go in for a cut. Pete
