Any pilots in here? I have a question.

Post by dotx »

I've been looking at the Bangkok Flight Academy (see here: http://www.talenttec.co.th/service_flying.php) to get a license to fly ultralight aircraft. The course itself "prepares" you for the exam, but then you have to go take it with the Department of Civil Aviation. Anybody has any experience taking this type of exams? Any idea of the paperwork involved? Am I in for a major headache or is it a matter of taking the written/practical exam and that's it? I'm worried about taking the whole course and then not being able to pass the test and get the license. I don't just want to learn to fly these things. I want the actual licence.

I asked the school, but their answers are somewhat confusing (might be a question of language).

I have a micro light license and have been to Chachoengsao, Chonburi, about 6 years ago to have a look at a flight club there. I met Kuhn Tip and was very amazed about there eqipment
(Tecnam P-92, Fresh Breeze paramotor)
Don't know about getting a license but they can help you.
You had to join the Royal Thai Flight Club to fly in Thailand and the costs were about
(i think) 2500 baht a year. But its a long time ago and maybe things have changed scince
then. It was not a comercial club so the information you will get will be ok.

Thanks for the info. I'm guessing you didn't get your license in Thailand, right?

The school from the link mentioned the 2,500 baht for the membership (apparently, it's still the same amount) so I'm taking that as a good sign.

Their next ground school workshop is near the end of October and I would like to join. Just wanted to make sure first that I can actually get licensed. I'll see if I can get in touch with the flying club in Chachoengsao.

Ha! I'm traveling to Bangkok for this. It sucks, but seems to be the only alternative.

Is there a company at Hua Hin airport where you can hire a Cessna and pilot for an hours pleasure flight?

Have a look at this thread, Gus:

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=14238

They may not run it as a joy flight, but call it an "introductory flight".

Nereus, Thank you very much for the info, when I am over in a couple of weeks I'll perhaps check them out, 8,500 for 1 hour seems a bit steep for Thailand but we will see.

That seems very good to me for hiring a private plane with an experienced pilot. For my own curiosity, how much do you think would be reasonable?

I'm a bit out of touch with prices in the UK but I thought it was about £100 per hour, I'll have a surf around tomorrow and see how much an hour costs in the UK.

They are a law unto themselves, Gus, and can charge what they like as they are mostly only dealing with "elite" young people where Daddy pays. They were charging Baht 17,500 an hour for the Robinson R22 helicopter, which is over the top. But then they crash one now and again, so need to have a reserve!

If you take a trip over the other side of the Gulf, the flying club near Pattaya will probably have a better deal going.

Donair who operate from EGNX (East Midlands UK) offer a trial flight of 1 hour for £119, but I guess that would be about 40 mins actual flying.
Maybe I could get a better return for my 8,500 down Bintabaht.:)

A side comment....on a whim yesterday I Googled "Thailand helicopter charter" to see the cost as a special treat for someone. I only looked at one company which has some new and seemingly quite sophisticated aircraft. I was anticipating a price of about 30,000 Baht per hour. I was shocked to see 87,500 Baht per hour    for their Bangkok based helicopter which is a 6 seater. The whim suffered a very quick death! Pete

Pete, that must be the most expensive helicopter flight in the world. Saying that, I wouldn't be interested even if it only cost 100 baht......lol. I've had more than my share of flying in helicopters.
