We went there last night wanting to see the new Angelina movie 'wanted', booked 2 seats, paid them, and then the salesgirl started chatting away in Thai with my wife saying that ALL movies in HH are ALWAYS dubbed in Thai. We got a refund and walked away disgusted......
Is this actually true ? Has anyone actually seen a (Holywood) dubbed movie recently ? Or was I the subject of a lousy practical joke ?

i dont know why you had a problem ,do they show movies in belgium cinamas in thai,i bet they dont so why do you complain ,its thailand and most thais actually speak thai believe it or not,so why should they sit in a cinema and not understand what they are watching ,just to keep 2/3 farangs happy,i dont think so,

My gripe is Thailand, I want to go to the movies here

When we have a movie festival in Belgium, it is of course shown in the original language, that is an integral part of the movie !
And decent subtitles thank you.
So, yes, last year they shown several Thai movies in Thai.
I bet you like to go to the movies and only watch the pictures move along.....sorry, not for me.

Agree with BB, its ludicrous that in a predominantly tourist town they don't have just one of the screens showing in English. Market Village however has never been designed or managed with foreigners in mind - it is a completely Thai shopping mall - they don't seem worried about loss of potential trade.

With regard to Hua Hin cinema showing Hollywood movies in Soundtrack, they very rarely do. Most of the time they are dubbed into Thai and if you catch the English version it's quite lucky.
I emailed Major Cineplex Head Office in BKK once and they said it's up to the local manager what they do. I know many people have said to Hua Hin that they want soundtrack, both expats and thais, but to no avail.

I'd get yourself a rapidshare account and find R5 or TS copies on the net....its not hard.
A quirk of the Russian market is that films are released there on dvd shortly after cinema releases so good R5 dvd burns are usually available a month after the film is out.
The dodgy dvd sellers in town sell a wide range of qualities - usually crap if its a new film - a cam version complete with heads and talking.
Sod the cinema....other than for the odd Thai film I just dont bother any more....the current manager is an idiot.

We check the movie listings at the Cineplex at Market Village on a regular basis and I cant remember the last "soundtrack" movie I saw listed there. . .must have been six months or more.

In Bangkok, with all the theatres that there are, most movies seem to be screened in the original English with subtitles in Thai ( not the Thai movies of course) I have not made a detailed study of this, but we are heading there this coming weekend and I plan to confirm what I remember.
IF the argument about this being Thailand and everybody needs movies in Thai hold any water, why dont ALL the movies get dubbed? As well, the audiences for the ones I have seen in Bangkok in the original English ( and the last .. .a month or two ago. . .was some US blockbuster with a packed theatre) have been 90% Thai! What are all these THAI people doing in a theatre showing an English language movie . . .if they dont actuallyprefer the soundtrack version?
And I have watched enough movies in Thai to know that the dubbing is just atrocious. They dont even bother to hide that fact that it is just two men and one woman in a booth somewhere doing ALL the voices. . .badly.( Any fight scene is particularly bad and I generally get the giggles.) And EVERY film is done by these same three people with their "Pukka Sahib" Thai accents . . .who must be millionaires by now. (OK After all I may have answered my own question. Maybe thats exactly why all those discerning Bangkokians DO go to the soundtrack showings!)

It IS a tourist town after all, with LOTS of tourist families and I have often wondered what is available in Hua Hin at night for a visiting family with kids. Why NOT the latest movies in one theatre out of the four. .cleverly advertised in advance around the hotels?
But then we get into discussing such western marketing concepts as appropriate advertising, attracting repeat business, developing a variety of customer bases, trying new methods of filling seats, creativity etc . . .and TIT after all. And we all see how well the current policy works for them at Major Cineplex Hua Hin.
When have you EVER seen ANY movie there with more than one or two dozen people in attendance?
IMHO it is just some kind of tax write off for Mr Major or perhaps a place to employ an inept cousin at the usherette level where he cant do too much damage to the Major family fortunes.

What a load of codswallop. You have completely missed the point. When a film is dubbed you lose a great deal. Moist people (or even most people) would much rather read subtitles. Dubbing is for backward areas where there is a large population of people who cannot read. The local Ciniplex manager must be a dick as I think you will find most Thais in Hua Hin would prefer subtitles. That's what the DVD makers have discovered.
I have recently watched two excellent German films, Untergang and Stalingrad. Both were in German and with subtitles. I can't imagine Hitler speaking with a Manchester or Chicago accent somehow.
I couldn't understand The Departed until I got a decent set of subtitles. Should the British dub American films as well. It reminds me of the Comic Strip Presents with Arthur Scargill being played by Al Pacino.

One of the funniest bits of dubbing I’ve come across was on a British made documentary about a coup in South America. One of the retired generals who had been involved looked very similar to the late cricketer Fred Trueman, and the mischievous film makers had his interview dubbed in a thick Yorkshire accent.
It was absolutely hilarious and I suppose no one in South America would realize what was going on to take offense.

It's all been said. In BKK original soundtrack is more the norm. Even in Petchaburi they show original soundtrack. Pattaya, Phuket and other tourist resorts - original soundtrack. My wife is Thai as are her friends and they don't want to watch western movies dubbed in Thai.

O.K. I've erased my response twice now so here goes the vanilla version:
1) Steve is probably not a prick just because he doesn't agree with one of you.....and once again you've outdone yourselves with the usual bitching about Thais.......so how many of you guys has a Thai wife? I bet every Thai guy you meet would love to shake your hand and thank you for taking one more woman off their hands......I'm very happy now to learn finally why the Brits were run out of America.......who could stand to live with most of you?
2) Back to the point.....since many of you seem to have a lot of time on your hands (yeah, just like me) why don't some of you go to Tesco one day and start counting.......sorting your count between what appear to be Thai people, and what appear to be white skinned people of another race. At the end of your counting session, which to be fair should last at least an hour......how 'bout reporting back to the forum the results, # of Thais vs. # of others.
