Hua Hin address map?

Post by Farang »

Does anyone know if there is somewhere a map explaining the Hua Hin addresses?

I know in the address f.ex: 114/34 the 114 is the block number and the 34 is the house/shop/apartment number. However, without some sort of orientation help or other systematic guideline all addresses in HH are found by trial and error. Presumably at least the Post Office and Tessabahn should have this matter in hand.

A map showing just the block numbers in HH would be great help. Is anyone on the ball on this?

That wouldn't work in my Soi. There are several 'block numbers' and 'house numbers' are totally random.

They are getting to grips with it in parts of BKK and renaming houses so that they form some sort of order.
However, it's not planned for HH as yet. I understand the address number to be determined by the order the building was registered and has nothing to do with it's physical location. Hence the address number and soi has to be followed by an area or at least some clue as to where it is!

^^ They started doing this in Bangkok over 20 years ago. I remember where we lived getting a name and number for the main soi and and sub soi and the house getting a number based on logical progression instead of the Thai xx/yy style numbering assigned according to registration order. The two addresses were both usable alternatives for some years, although unless you knew the area you would never know they referred to the same house. I think we must have been in a test area because it doesn't seem to have caught on in other areas of Bangkok. Given the amount of new development in Hua Hin it would have been really easy to move to a "western" style of addressing. Better not to confuse the post office though.

All this illustrates a very good reason to get a GPS, learn how to use it properly, and encourage people to give GPS coordinates instead of crazy undecipherable directions. Especially businesses when advertising their location. Many people already have it right in their pocket and in their car as most smartphones and new cars have GPS included. It makes sense to use it.

C'mon guys, you know better than to talk about logic in Thailand. Obedience my boy, obedience is what matters.

It does get confusing when you get a bit out of town, a business near to my place has done exactly as you suggest and put their GPS location onto the net. Unfortunately, their property, like mine, is down a long drive which doesn't show on online maps and so consequently people still struggle to find it as they're actually nearer to another road than the one which gives access. . If you're in that position, I think setting your location to the end of the drive might help people to get there.

Much as I thought, TIT, after all. Thanks for the replies.

Let the confusion reign on!

Of course it would. He knows it would still be trial and error. And that a map of block numbers would narrow down the area to be searched.

Maybe, but we aren't all as clever as you :D

I'm sure somebody understands the allocation in my Soi, but I can't make any sense of it at all.

[Edit] It certainly makes no sense to Thais. We've never had anybody find our house without having to talk them in by telephone, or meeting them somewhere and following us in.

The clever ones who say they can find us by our address always end up by Hua Hin School, which is about 15 minutes away by road.

Yes they did. And I think that it was around the same time that the Tabien Baan was changed from a piece of old rice paper to the current blue book.

The strange system came about because the original surveys were largish block sizes, a lot of them old rice paddies, and were in numerical order. As the larger blocks were sub-divided into house blocks, the first one sold was given a / number. The next one sold may well have been .5 Km away down the Soi, but it was given the next numerical / number, and so it went on and on.

I think that some of the newer develpoments in Hua Hin follow a more logical order, at least within the one development.

Yes, where I am, it's /1, /2, /3.....

But I assume that would be down to the developer rather than any state interference? Or is that not the case?

That's how it happened where we live, the numbers were just allocated to the next house built with out any reference to position. My number is 80 higher than the house next door as it was built a couple of years later.

Just remembered this. You think Thailand addresses are bad, it could be worse: Nicaragua.

Instead of street names or numbers Nicaraguans use reference points from where they start describing a certain address. ... An example could be From the Calvario Church, 1 block south, half a block east

Sometimes Up and Down are used instead of east and west, because the sun comes up in the east. 'To the lake' is used in cities next to big lakes. Compasses don't point toward lakes, so you need a map app.

Seems reasonable. Except the reference point may no longer exist - except as a reference point when giving directions. For example, From where the Calvario Church was, 1 block...
