The state of Soi 102

Post by hin »

Recently did 90 day parole reporting at Bluport. Decided to return home via Soi 102. We used to use 102 regularly but have not traveled it for more than a year. What a shock..! After the pavement ends it has become hardly more than a narrow and very bumpy cow path. Atho unpaved, it used to be fairly well maintained and 2 lane width. Hard to believe its present condition as there are many nice houses and communities along that road so it seems there would be a lot of complaints. We were happy to cross over to Soi 112 at Mahassamutr but in the past would have continued on Soi 102.

Many roads farther west and in vicinity of the new Thap Tai hospital have been paved in the past 2 or 3 years and even re-aligned or relocated and even closely spaced street lights added altho there are no houses and almost no traffic.

If Mahassamutr gets going maybe Soi 102 will be brought up to snuff so the fancy people will have a more convenient route to matriculate back & forth to Bluport…

About the lower end of 102 - Have seen conjecture in the forum about possibility of Poonsuk and Bintabaht customers migrating to Soi 102. I don’t buy it. Even in the area near the railroad crossing my mental image is just lots of dusty shop houses. If those businesses hope to attract some of the spoils of the doom of Poonsuk and Bintabaht they need to organize themselves to work together on making their community attractive and as they are not in convenient walking distance of anything maybe try to streamline the parking picture. And squeezing each other out of business with continuous price wars, like they did in the past is not a route to survival. Remember all the free roast dinners and other come ons that used to happen there? It didn’t work. They need to pull in additional customers from elsewhere, not from each other. They need to pull themselves up as a community, not individually. For many expats, Soi 102 and 112 are on a convenient side of Hua Hin but will never attract the same regulars that are attracted to Binta and Poonsuk. Its the old cliche - “apples & oranges”

Couldnt agree more Hin :thumb: the state of the road from the school upwards is absolutely atrocious! Add to the problem heavy vehicles travelling up and down all day and creating ongoing dust clouds life is less than pleasant for residents.
Most of the houses in the area are under company ownership and pay a premium in taxes for the privilege of living on what best described as a goat track. The Tessabaan came out and measured up the road last October and splashed some red paint markers along the track. They said they would be commencing reconstruction of the road at the end of November last year, still nothing, The developer of Falcon Hill has already put a concrete road in down to Soi 102 some time ago so I would imagine he too would be pretty irritated with the lack of progress to date, but TIT! Rant over!

Agree, once this road is good, will be a pretty solid Soi with connections to 112.

“Matriculate”?

We’ll have none of that around here. 🤣
I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

I have always found 102 a good safe route away from traffic for cyclists wanting to get the other side of the hill without having the initial challenge or either 88, Pala U or the other road past Da Vinci school. Also a chance to get the 4x4 dirty although it gets a bit narrow before you reach the new road near the waste dump and the foliage can scratch the paintwork a bit. It certainly suffered in last years floods and I wonder if doing it up without improving the drainage would only result in any work being destroyed in the next floods. If I lived along there I would be annoyed at it's condition with a pickup being the best bet and a fear of damaging the underside of normal cars.

Agree with you on 4x4/pickup part needed for that section and flooding issues.

That said, who's ideal retirement is dealing with that on a daily basis ?

We have to face facts and see that its the older generation and some Thai's in the City and area, and unless this City wants to lose it, should be working hard to keep them happy.

I was dreaming of 102 having bicycle lanes last night, for all the fine folks doing that every day.

But yes, TIT.
