As answer to most questions: They had no guns, they were in uniform and identification in Thai and English. They went from house to house. They only asked passport and nothing else. The reason is as they said to my wife: better localize a farang if something happens......same reason as 90 days report. For our security.....BULLSHIT.

These 'raids' are nothing new and happen every few years in Hua Hin, which is effectively a police state.

The only time something similar happened to me was whilst sitting in a bar one afternoon (centre of town) and the tourist police wandered by and very apologetically asked me to sit down with them and answer some questions.
They said they had been asked by BKK to get details of farangs who'd lived in town for "some time" and I was shown forms with mug shots of others who I knew.
There were two coppers. One in civvies who I knew and one, senior looking chap in uniform.
I was asked by the senior bloke what I did here and before I could reply, the chap I knew said I drank beer and played golf - that was about right. Was then asked for my passport which I didn't have but I only lived down the street so volunteered to get it. Everything was in order.
Then the polaroid camera came out and I was asked for a photo. I told them my right profile was better than the left. Obviously, they wanted a straight on shot. We were just laughing about it all and they both kept apologising.
This was about 13/14 years ago so as buksida says, it's nothing new.
However, I might take a different approach now if regular police who I didn't know turned up on my doorstep. Don't really know how I'd react until and if it happens. However, the idea of staying "cool" but firm usually works over here.

It's all just a higher class version of the raids they make on the tin shacks looking for illegal Cambodians and Burmese. During those I don't think they say .."it's for your safety...." which in this case is nothing but meaningless dribble to take the edge off the insult of what they're doing.

To be honest, I've never heard of or experienced this type of house to house, street to street checking anywhere else but in Hua Hin.

Same policemen as in my OP appeared at the home of one of the falangs living in a row-house. As they were trying to harass the falang occupant the lady owning the row of houses appeared and very, very loudly and in no uncertain terms told the police to clear out while they can.

This is precisely what then ensued, the police retreated meekly yet with great alacrity.

Anyway the security police from Bangkok who rent in a house on Phetkasem soi 6/1 since more than a decade has the pictures of farangs staying in Hua Hin. They took pictures without our knowledge. So nothing new, at least official .

About 3 years ago this happened to me. Door to door MIB in uniform on bike. Asking very politely for id and if I rented or owned house. Said they were keeping track of US.
This was after 2 armed attempts in our complex so maybe just looking after us?

Had the same visit a couple of days ago from a policeman I have known for years. Pretty much the same information that immigration have anyway. Gave him a copy of my passport, work permit, tabien ban and a photo. I had the Thai text that I could not read translated to me. What colour are you, height, face shape, eyebrow type??????? Are you a gang member???? Who are the other members? Just wrote N/A to that lot. Think the gang thing probably just meant who can we contact in an emergency. You have to register yourself with immigration anyway, as do hotels have to register guests I believe so apart from a couple of strange questions pretty much the same. I will make some enquiries with my legal people and post later.

Inevitable what?
The article could have been written by a Pheu Thai politician it was so biased and inaccurate.

For the little I know and follow the rigmarole that is Thai politics the article made sense to me, certainly can see it panning out that way.

:offtopic:

This thread is regarding police checkups on foreigners in Hua Hin - not Thai politics.
