Hello everyone....for info I found the following article on the website of the Orthodox church in Thai
09 August 2014

ROC Representative in Thailand, visits Hua Hin City.

From 6th to the 9th August, 2014, archimandrite Oleg Cherepanin, (Representative of the Russian Orthodox Church in Thailand), visited the city of Hua Hin, situated in the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Thailand. During the visit, he became acquainted with the ongoing construction of the church of Holy Royal Martyrs, which is being built now in this city. Fr. Oleg observed that certain elements of the ongoing construction had been completed including the internal plastering of the first and second floors. Partially completed elements included the communication system and roof tile work. Archimandrite Oleg discussed a number of issues with the builders concerning the work’s completion as this involved a separate contractor. Such issues included the concrete dome, decorative ornaments, reliquaries, icons and altar supplies.

The main purpose of Fr Oleg’s visit to Hua Hin was to address the need for additional work outside the budget. This additional work exceeded the original estimate made for the construction work. The construction of a raised road beside the church measuring more than one metre in height would potentially pose flood threats throughout the rainy season. Consequently Fr. Oleg approved a decision to raise the land level of the construction to 1.2 metres. This suggestion had been raised by the Foundation Committee of the Orthodox Church in Thailand and required an additional allocation of 1,800,000 baht. The suggestion was blessed by archimandrite Oleg during this important visit.

Completion of all church construction and landscaping is expected by December 2014.

Hello all
An earlier update from the same website from May 2013

19 May 2013

New Orthodox Church in Hua Hin will bear the name of Holy Royal Martyrs.

Orthodox Christians of Thailand decided on the name for a new church that is planned to be built in Hua Hin. Clerics and parishioners agreed to consecrate it in the name of Holy Royal Martyrs.

The reasons for the choice were:

Hua Hin holds a summer residence of His Majesty the King of Thailand
St. Martyr Tzar Nicholas II Romanov visited Hua Hin, when he came to Siam in early XX century
Year 2013 marks 400th anniversary of Romanov Royal Dynasty
Archimandrite Oleg (Cherepanin), Representative of Russian Orthodox Church in Thailand, supported the believers in their decision and sent it to the church authority for confirmation.

During the discussion, parish council of Trinity Church on Phuket offered that, if the new church will take the name of Royal Martyrs, the revered icon of St. Princes Tatyana could be given to it. The icon is currently stored in Phuket Church and holds a true baptismal cross of the Princess. Also, one of the parishioners is planning to give to the new church the icon of Protection of Mother of God, that comes from Tzarskoye Selo, a summer residence of Romanov dynasty before the Revolution. Both items were legally bought from private collections in the USA.

A plot of land bought for a new church in Hua Hin

Representation of Russian Orthodox Church in Thailand and Fund for Orthodox Church in Thailand considered a request by believers of Hua Hin (Prachuap Khiri Khan province)––to build an Orthodox Church in this popular resort town.

People of the Representation surveyed the position of Orthodox believers in the area, negotiated with local government and tourist authorities and studied numbers of tourists from Orthodox countries coming to Hua Hin, as well as expected growth of these numbers in years to come. The fact that Orthodox Christians in Hua Hin currently have to travel more than 120 km to the nearest church in Dormition Monastery in Ratchaburi was also taken into account. The decision was made to:

- buy for the ownership of the Fund for Orthodox Church in Thailand a land plot in Hua Hin up to 800 square meters in size and, with the blessing of the hierarchy, to start building a new church. Approximate building time-line is years 2013-2014.

According to the decision, father Danai (Daniel) Vanna, Chairman of the Fund for Orthodox Church in Thailand visited Hua Hin on May15 and concluded the deal of buying the land plot.

A size of the plot is 800 square meters, 20 m wide and 40 m long.
The plot is stretched from West to East so that the church may be rightly placed on it according to canons
It is located in central Hua Hin, in walking distance from central driveway of Patkasem street (900 meters by Soi 102).
Approximate budget of the building project is 12,000,000 ТНВ (about 400,000 USD).

This project will not affect the progress of St. Nicholas Church construction in Bangkok, which is the main strategic task for Orthodox Representation at the moment. The funds reserved for the new Bangkok church are kept in a separate bank account and cannot be used for any other expenses.

It is still being discussed, which saint or a sacred event should give the name to the new church in Hua Hin. Local believers did not consent about it yet.

Actually, if you look at the last photo, the building has been raised a long way off the ground. If the church floods, the rest of Soi 102 will be in serious trouble.

hhfarang... change the record!!... do you think a smiley face and the word flood belong in the same sentence?

Lots of things happen on soi 102 other than flooding
We have spent 8 happy years here on soi 102, and never been flooded yet!! and never needed the insurance either.

I spent 10 years there and that lower area of 102 near the village flooded every year. Maybe the huge drains installed recently will address that in the future.

In Bangkok, my relatives live about 3 blocks away from a mosque,
they not only do their call to prayer many times starting about 5AM or so, but the bleeping place has loudspeakers
aimed in all directions to wake every body up, regardless if you are Muslim or not.
It is disgusting and I was very bothered by this. I hope that people in Cha Am , Hua Hin, and Pran Buri , all object to any mosque being built if the Muslims will then put in any means to
wake up any one who is not Muslim. It is too bad that Bangkok did not think of this and
nip it in the bud years ago.
Just my feelings of course
Pluto is my favorite planet!, especially now that we all can see close up
pictures of it.

Call to prayer blasting out over 102..?
Just one more element of acceptable daily noisy!
Whether it be motorcycles, trucks, or damn soi dogs..the Thais always accept this constant audiable barrage. :banghead:

If those loud-speakers do indeed pipe-up at all hours, how long will it be before the locals get p****ed about it i wonder..? (Don't think I'll be investing in a house down that way).

Hopefully it is a Russian church for the sake of you folks in the area. I doubt any church outside Islam rings the bells 5 times a day every day starting between 4 and 5 a.m. I lived in Saudi Arabia for four years and swore I would never put myself in a situation to hear that loudspeaker prayer call again. When we first considered the move to Hua Hin we were about to buy land in Palm Hills to build on. We were out there with a realtor and I heard the all too familiar call to prayer off in the distance. I asked the realtor about it and he told me there was a Muslim village nearby. We bought at the other end of town as far away from that as we could and still be in Hua Hin.

Interistingly enough, I studied in a Catholic School (in Singapore) right next door to a mosque. When they had their call for prayer we just stopped lessons until the call was over. It's less than five minutes, no big deal. Besides, we did have Malays (who are typically Muslim) in many classes in the school. Wasn't seen as anything abnormal. Many Chinese, who believe in ancestor worship, Indians who were Hindu. .. We respected each others cultures and celebrated each festivity with them, and them with us. We're still in contact today.
