200 Baht Admission to Sam Phan Nam Floating Market
Re: 200 Baht Admission to Sam Phan Nam Floating Market
How many Thais do you see spending cash, apart from the odd bowl of noodles? Certainly, back in the day when I used to get dragged around there, it was Farangs or partners of who were spending cash, while most Thais were too busy taking selfies.
Of course, I don't go any more, so maybe things have changed.

Re: 200 Baht Admission to Sam Phan Nam Floating Market
Headed of to the floating market off soi 112 about 3.30 this afternoon at the request of Mrs B who wanted to buy some dry goods from one of the vendors there. Arrived at the entry, Mrs B walked straight through and I pulled out my Thai drivers license and was promptly informed I had to pay 200 baht. Mrs B intervened and explained that we were only going to buy some items she wanted from a vendor. She did go on to explain that it had never been a problem before and that we had previously brought quite a few paying foreign touring families as an outing whilst they were in Hua Hin.
No they definitely insisted I had to pay.
I opted to wait for Mrs B at the entrance whilst she went to make her purchases. It was interesting to observe whilst standing there the process adopted by tour guides. Tour goes in paying individually and after they have entered the establishment the guide goes to the window, hands over his Id and gets about 50% of the entry price from the group back in his pocket.. Not a bad arrangement for the guides!
Mrs B returned about 15 mins later after managing to get what she wanted, She did comment that it seemed a bit run down now and could do with some maintenance.

^^ if Thai people are not paying an admission price then there were a group of farangs who were and this is from whom the "tour guide" was getting a kick back from? On a Monday? Did they come in together? Via what means? How did you know it was "about 50%"?
Re: 200 Baht Admission to Sam Phan Nam Floating Market
When we arrived there were a 4 or 5 thais waved through along with my wife, no charge, and this has certainly been my experience on previous occasions when there. Process for the tour guide was fairly straight forward. He arrives with his party of farangs, in this case 4 Chinese speaking tourists, they pay their 200 baht each for entry, he waits , when they have gone in he goes to the counter, he hands over what appears to be his id, which was photocopied, he signs it and is handed 4 100 baht notes and walks past and continues back to his silver van. Second group of 6 arrive same process, and yes I did mention it was today when I posted.centermid7 wrote:^^ if Thai people are not paying an admission price then there were a group of farangs who were and this is from whom the "tour guide" was getting a kick back from? I have been at least half a dozen times in the last year, never paid or asked to pay.
Great noodle soups, Thai food, and cheap t shirts and singlets, half the price of Hua Hin.

Re: 200 Baht Admission to Sam Phan Nam Floating Market
Hi,
Went there a few weeks ago to see what it was like now as we had been there not long after it first opened and this is the review I put on Google Maps
Absolutely awful would give zero stars if possible. As we weren't Thai they demanded 200 baht each and there was a sign saying no refunds. Inside it was very run down and in need of repair. The boards to walk on were poorly patched and loose in places. The water in the lake was very dirty and you could hardly see the fish. A few units open selling tat and a few food outlets. All in all a big rip off so avoid. Such a contrast to when it first opened a number of years ago. It was free nice clean water so you could see the beautiful fish.
Such a shame as while it was touristy it was quite nice and looked after but no longer unfortunately.

It was a favourite with my visitors a few years ago (before the 200 baht).
I don't understand why they would charge to shop!! I'm sure it's lost customers who actually spend money because of it.
It's basically a market selling goods etc. Can you imagine being charged to enter Market Village or Bluport. How about Tesco's charging you to get your groceries. The principle is the same.
Morons in charge!!!

I am still inundated with visitors. Last Monday I took them to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market - a real market, where for just 250 Baht/head, they were taken shopping by boat. OK, all markets sell the same tat at inflated prices, but at least this was an authentic floating market, and our visitors received a lot more than just market entrance for their money.
