H.H. MiB Vs H.H. tuk-tuk 'mafia'

Post by usual suspect »

Was talking with a bunch of ex-pats tonight & some were saying that the new Chief of H.H. police has come down heavy on the local T.T. 'mafia'..seemingly he has TOLD whoever that fairs have to be slashed..the cost of going from mid-town to Sports Villa went up almost overnight from 100b to 200 about 1 or 2 yrs ago (I actually reported on here that the H.H. taxis were happy at the time to still do this run for 100, so getting the T.T's trade).
Well the rumour is that fare will now/soon be 60B..! :thumb:
This all may just be hearsay, but these guys were all agreeing to what was being said..
...we'll wait & see eh..?

That would be a most pleasant surprise but I doubt it very much.

Well, we caught 2 tuk tuks last night (one was from our regular), and both were the most expensive we've ever paid.

I love the idea of a Tuk Tuk mafia... I have images of all these Tuk Tuk drivers going home, after a 5-hour day of extorting tourists, to their luxury mansions, and sitting by the pool sipping cocktails with their plentiful mia-nois

Just saw this on the Bangkok Post.

As part of its "returning happiness to the Thai people" campaign, the military junta has ordered a crackdown on mafia-controlled taxi services at Suvarnabhumi airport, set benchmarks for motorcycle taxi fares, and regulated passenger vans in a bid to reduce traffic congestion. What are the reactions of transport operators? Have their happiness returned? (Video by Chumporn Sangvilert and Jetjaras Na Ranong) http://www.bangkokpost.com/multimedia/v ... -on-wheels

Went from Bintabaht to Sport Villa on Sunday by TT and price was 120 - mind you it was 2am so quite reasonable. However I was with a Thai lady friend which probably related more to a local price price rather than tourist price

Reality in Phuket. Not the ones at the bottom of the food chain but some of the heads of taxi queues are now ordered by the military to explain their fat (and I mean really FAT) bank accounts. One was found to have 150 million Baht in his account so he might have some business on the side because even by charging tourists up to 10 times the price for a ride that it would cost in Bangkok (normal Phuket practice) it would take a long time to generate that kind of money.
We are all living in 'the good old days' of the future.
