A related episode in Phuket:

Tempo set to rise in Phuket public land take-back drive

He told The Phuket News this morning (June 24), “Every piece of public land has to be returned to public use. Some building, the businessmen do not have any right to build it on.” He spoke particularly about Surin Beach, where – after the sweeping-away of all structures on the west side of the walkway – businesses are now under threat of having their remaining structures on the east side knocked down or taken back by the Cherng Talay Tambon Administration Organisation (OrBorTor). While saying that the remaining parts of businesses along the beach would be looked at case by case, he added, “No one has right to build something on public land. On the other side [to the east of the path], the buildings built [as emergency housing] for local people [after the tsunami] may not be rented out nor used for business. I have to look back to the OrBorTor’s building documents to see what they built in the past. “Any structure that was added to [an OrBorTor] building must be pulled down.” The Phuket News has obtained a copy of the Nangseu Samkan Samrab Ti Luang (NorSorLor) paper – a deed for public land – which was issued 30 years ago and shows that all land to the west of the main road and Soi Haad Surin 8 is public land. “Surin Beach will be the model for how we handle [encroachment on] other public land in Phuket,” V/Gov Jamroen said. He said he was delighted that, at last, something could be done. “I am so glad that things are finally working in the right way. I have tried to do this for long time – about 10 years. “But some people did not want to give good corporation while others were afraid of influential people. Now is the right time, however, as I have the [Army’s] National Council for Peace and Order to support me. “I would also urge the media to continue publishing stories about encroachment by influential people.” V/Gov Jamroen has been in Bangkok this week at a minister-level conference on disaster risk reduction. Next week, after his return, the tempo of the anti-land-grab campaign can be expected to quicken significantly.

Seems like we straying into murky waters now, is this a suitable discussion for a public forum? Interesting never the less.

With the two new 'major' condo complexes..1 at Takiap (is it called something silly like 'Seacraze'..?) & the pending 6500+ rooms at The Energy halfway to Cha Am..do any of you forum members think that the 'new' mass of young Hi-So Thais that are starting to swamp HH each weekend/holiday might just have some future influence on things here..?
My thinking being some influencial family who has clout may just march into HH amphur office one day & say "right..creaky old piers down, burnt, then in with a million tons of 'Readymix' + block-pavers..& we want a promenade by year-end..! Well OK, not as brash as that, but new ideas, projects & funding just may come from BKK without much warning, & HH gets a well overdue beachfront re-vamp. (Oh yes..& while your team has those diggers doing the footings.. bury all those damn horses under it all).

For me these old piers are an iconic part of Hua Hin and part of its charm the three or four little guest houses are quite unique you can stay in any of those for 600-800 baht a night sleeping over the water listening to the sea lapping up against the wooden pile's and enjoying a nice slight breeze, but the only downside that doesn't bother me is none of them have hot running water. We are personal friends with the owners of Birdie Guest House and they are always busy.

One of our favorite restaurants in Hua Hin is Cholay the first seafood restaurant on a pier you come to walking down from the Hilton its food is amazing and its a really nice experience eating there at sunset cool breeze coming off the sea, its also nice to see the Thai Navy Ships guarding the palace all lit up like Christmas tree's.

Now in my opinion these piers tenants should be made to tart the piers up a little. Walking a little further down i think their is plenty of scope for a promenade i would like to see a new leisure pier with attractions and maybe a concert stage a couple of beach bars with a little house music being gently piped out in the evening but not to loud to disturb the neighbors . I would like to see an environment for everyone not just aimed at Bangkok Hi so's with crazy pricing and no repeat multinational chains selling burgers, pizza, and coffee. Manage the shore line properly picking up all the plastic broken fishing nets and drift wood cleaning up all the dog poo would all be part of my plan where old meets new and they could exist along side each other and really add value to Hua Hin.

I was disappointed back in March i took my little girl for a stroll and wanted to walk down the fishing pier but it was barrier off although some Thais didn't take any notice and just navigated around the barrier but i wasn't going to do this with my little one in tow i was also saddened by the amount of debris on the little beach all manner of rubbish and all preventable.

What is the story with the fisherman's jetty being closed. I went the other day first time in a long time to see it is partially blocked off and falling apart.
As usual here no maintenance so the jetty is falling down, shop at the car park is now closed, squid cleaning area is disgusting.
There seems to be no plan to make the place look better

If you get underneath it, especially towards the far end, you will see that it is supported by fresh air. Mind you, I went on a boat trip with Barry a while back, and he pointed out a road bridge, still in everyday use, in a much worse condition.

The current local administration is very keen to develop and improve Hua Hin for residents and tourists alike, but they do not hold the purse strings. All major expenditure needs approval and finance from the provincial authority and therein lays the problem.

The pier nearest to the fishing pier was being demolished when I was down there a few days ago.

I think it was damaged before.

Problem is that TIT - it's hard to tell the difference between demolition and refurbishment.

I too like eating on the piers and any visitors that I entertain, that is their first request. One group from bkk, book an end of pier table at CL weeks before they come.
My choice, be selective, if there are any in good repair keep them, or build a one new one with multiple restaurants.

^ Agree but it maybe prompts a move from a resort town to pastures new and more rural
