I got stung by one some years ago and whilst it wasn't particularly painful, it left a sort of burn on my arm that took quite a long time to heal up, so I would avoid them. It was transparent with a blue tinge to it if that's the kind of thing you saw.

All jelly fish have some type of sting, the level of pain and type of poisons vary by species... Children can be stung by these easily and it can be very painful.... long-sleeved swim shirt will help but you have the legs to contend with.. They sell aqua skins which is a very thin wetsuit, perfect for avaiding the stings.. When I scuba dive I where a .5mm wetsuit for skin protection even if the water is warm.. Booties, gloves and then all I have to watch out for is my neck and head which is in my line of site... Look at these for ideas... .5-1.5 is plenty for warm waters

If you do get stung vinegar is supposed to help.

If you get stung and are far from vinegar and help, but have a trusted friend around
as well as a cup, then urine can help until you get to a clinic or hospital.
I won't say who my friend was, or where I was when I got stung, but it kept me from a lot more pain
until I got to see a doctor. I only got stung on my leg, glad to say.
