It was 43 for me and I have never regretted the decision. You do need to find something useful to do, though. Since, for me, life needs a purpose.
Living in the hills just outside Cha-am. Peace and tranquillity all around.
Sheer bliss!
Interesting. I lived in the hills in the Algarve and as beautiful as it was, only lasted a year before needing stimulation/company. Hua Hin has a nice balance. Not a big city but with enough amenities and entertainment.

Also have lived outside of city limits on the 3218 for going on 4 years.

Love the peace and quiet, only visiting the city once or twice a week and never on weekends, unless it can't be helped. Population doubles when the Grockles arrive.

Well, you live and learn. 'Grockle' is the English equivalent to 'Farang'.

I'm none the wiser. What's an 'Emmit' (and don't tell me it's a 'Grockle').

Sorry. Brief distraction before we get back to the topic.

They are slang names for the thousands of holiday makers invading the South West each summer. Many of them towing their Emmit Wagon (caravan) behind them.

Surely, as an ex Matelot, you must have heard the expression.

No, I imagine it refers to all the Bangkok Thais coming down for the weekend.

We have a house just outside HH, up in the hills, and aim to visit around three times each year with a five year plan (my daughter will be at Uni then) to split our life 50:50 between HH and the UK. The old adage is that 'home is where the heart is' and each time we visit it feels more like home. The other 'homes' are Milan and London.

I'm not sure about 'retirement' and whether that means I'd even want to live in HH full time, I agree with Mr P that life needs a purpose and I don't think I'll be disinterested or inactive enough with what I do to retire for some years. As Confucious said (roughly), if you find a job you love, you never have to work a day in your life. So perhaps become self-employed and doing what I want, when and where I want is the ultimate dream...

I spent some years in Cornwall with the Navy at RNAS Culdrose and both terms were common down that way.

We used to live there full time 1999-20004, then moved back to UK. Been back to Thailand most years since then but have not always visited HH but gone to north Thailand instead.

Our original plan, was to spend at least 6 months a year in HH but we got the travel bug now and want to see more of the World with our son, before we settle down and he has to go to school.

Now spend our time in UK, Italy and other countries but have property ties to HH, Nakhon Sawan and Chiang Mai, so we will be back and forth over the next few years.

Like christopher1, I also retired at age 47 and now enjoy traveling to different places at a more leisurely pace then I did when I travelled the World for work. But eventually we will settle in Hua Hin.

No hurry, it will still be there when we are ready to settle down. :D
I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

That's quite possible Steve, but obviously those using the word 'Grockle' were 'Emmets'!

Never actually lived in Hua Hin town, a bit like Christopher1 we lived in a small village in the hills 35 kms west of the town for six years. It was great to have Hua Hin within hitting distance for shopping and socialising, but nice to get back to the peace and quiet of the village. :D

Now in Nakhon Pathom, and still have the 'luxury' of Tesco Lotus and Makro, but still out of town and in the sticks. Suits us just fine.

I dream of the day. Currently in uk which I think is finished. My wife's family are from Bkk so HH is a good compromise as I need to be near the sea. Just have to find a way of making a living now!

I ticked a few months a year.

I get 10 weeks a year on a good run, feels like a second home, know the place like the back of my hand, loads of friends etc but 10 weeks is an extended holiday, it's not living there.
