Jellyfish?

Post by Robbie414 »

Hows the Jellyfish situation on Hua Hin beach at the moment? Is it usually particularly bad in September? And what type are they?

Thanks

Jellyfish

Post by LLSO »

Hi Rob,
As the resident coastal and marine guy. There are Jellyfish in the Hua Hin area. The peak season seems to be in June and July. I have observred at least a half a differnt species on the beach in June but do not know what species as I am not an invertebrate specialist.

Of the cnidarians (jellyfish) encountered in this part of the Gulf of Thailand there are no particularly dangerous ones. Those are usually found in southern waters near Australia and the Philipines. There was one report of a potentially deadly "box jellyfish" on the southern Islands a couple of years ago. That is extremely rare.

I would not be too concerned . Avoid swimming near offshore sandbars where the can be trapped at low tide. Common household vinegar is a good remedy for a sting as it neutralizes the venom. I have never heard of any serious encounters with jellyfish so you should be fine.

LL,

Thank you very much for that info, great to hear an informed opinion! And also great to hear that we don't really need to worry about Box, all other jellys intrigue me and I actually like to see them!

Thanks

Rob
