Met Dept warns 10 provinces to brace for downpour

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... r-downpour

"The Meteorological Department on Sunday warned residents in 10 provinces of the lower Central Plains and the South to brace for heavy downpours and strong winds over coming days.

Wanchai Sakudomchai, its director-general, said severe rain and strong winds will hit much of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Ranong, Phangnga, Phuket and Krabi over the next few days."..................

Rig workers gear up for evacuations

"Offshore rig workers in the South are prepared to make rapid evacuations in the event of treacherous seas and high winds whipped up by an approaching depression.

Companies running petroleum drilling operations in the lower Gulf of Thailand, off Songkhla and Nakhon Sri Thammarat provinces, have laid out plans to move their workers from rigs and boats to shore via helicopters and ships. Evacuations would happen if the sea and wind conditions become unsafe, and could be carried out at short notice at any time -- day or night."................

Tried explaining to the wife that today’s weather was a typical summers day in northern England - 22 degrees, overcast and drizzling, with a stiff wind.

Great for a one off relief but a sweet reminder of all things summer back home.

A tropical depression has formed in the Gulf. The last time that happened in the 80's I think, a fishing boat ended up a few km's inland on the mainland near Chumphon. In any event' I hope this one doesn't get that bad. Pete

^ It was November 1989 and named Typhoon Gay. What we have now is not a typhoon yet.

I'm not religious but I'll offer up this for all who risk their lives daily on the water:

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

I was here then and knew a couple of the victims on the Drilling Rig. A total SNAFU all round.

The present depressions central pressure is not very high, reported as 1002 Mb(29.56 inHg), and the wind gradient is not very steep, so very unlikely to develop into anything more than just a rain bearing depression. As I posted a few days ago, Buksi and Migrant may want to keep their wet weather gear handy!

I don't have an exact feel at the moment but that depression is moving more north than northwest. The satellite shows it right off the Rayong coast and heading towards Bangkok and Hua Hin as well. No idea if we'll get rain or just clouds. Already heavy cloud cover along the Rayong coast. Pete

Well, that was some storm last night. I'm just back from the school run - there's a lot of surface water/underwater obstacles out there - be careful.

1) Good for the garden.

2) You run?

3) Yes slowly over standing water, especially on rural roads going out of town.
Very scary how during heavy rain small potholes grow into deep ones that will wreck a wheel or worse.

Heavy rain again from Sunday
Published: 17/11/2017 at 08:17 PM
Online news: https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... due-sunday

You can watch these storms progress here: http://www.goes.noaa.gov/sohemi/sohemil ... scolw.html

...and they've now added in a flood alert: https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... -provinces

Heavy rain is expected in the lower Central Plains including Bangkok, the East and the upper South from Sunday as a depression moves in from Vietnam and Cambodia, the Meteorological Department warned on Friday.

The depression was to the west of the Philippines on Friday evening and was moving slightly northwesterly at 27 kilometres per hour, said department chief Wanchai Sakudomchai.

He predicted the storm would pass over central Vietnam and Cambodia between Sunday and Tuesday. That would increase the risk of heavy rain, flooding and runoff in the East, Greater Bangkok, the lower Central Plains and upper South, he said.

On Sunday and Monday there could be stormy conditions in Bangkok and its outskirts, Chanthaburi, Chon Buri, Chumphon, Kanchanaburi, Prachin Buri, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Ratchaburi, Rayong, Sa Kaeo, Surat Thani and Trat provinces.

On Monday and Tuesday more impact is predicted in Chumphon, Krabi, Phangnga, Phuket, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Ranong and Surat Thani.

People operating boats are advised to take precautions in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea where waves would be about two metres high. People living along the eastern coast of the South should beware of waves during the period.

I am beginning to believe that these people post stuff like this just cover their ***ss. Then in the unlikely event that there is heavy rain / floods, they are covered!

From the synoptic chart issued this morning the "storm" is just an area of low pressure(1002hPa at the centre) with maximum winds of 30 knots, and moving WNW at 15 knots. It is being opposed by a huge high pressure ridge(1046hPa at the centre) pushing down from China, which should deflect it to the south. If it does continue on its present predicted course it will dump rain on Vietnam and maybe a bit left over for Cambodia. If it is able to deflect to the south then there MAY be some heavy rain in the south of Thailand and Malaysia, just like the last time.

Synoptic charts are the only true indicator for predicting weather and wind flows. They are not predicted by the Thai Met Dept., but by surface and air reports from dozens of different unbiased sources. Air flows from high pressure areas to low pressure areas just like water and heat, despite what the Thai Met Dept. would have us believe.

https://www.tmd.go.th/en/weather_map.php

If you click on the chart it will enlarge, and if you click on it twice it will enlarge even more.
