Gusty winds in Chiang Rai also dropped eight electricity poles in Muang district and damaged two vehicles.
Some of the video shows the broken poles. Does not appear to be much re-bar inside. Probably another racket by the suppliers of the poles. Very dangerous practice as the poles carry the high voltage cables along with the other distribution lines.

The synoptic charts are still showing a light east to south east air flow, and the winds not over about 15 kts. May be some more storms in the north, but I doubt there will be much rain locally. A low pressure cell around Chiang Mia so probably the most significant feature.

Rainy season set to be wetter this year
Published: 14/05/2018 at 08:04 AM
Newspaper section: News https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... -this-year

Thailand could see 10% more rainfall than usual during this year's rainy season with Andaman coastal provinces and eastern areas being warned of particularly heavy downpours, says the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD).

TMD director-general Wanchai Sakudomchai said Thailand officially enters the rainy season this week due to the influence of southwesterly winds. The country will likely see above-average rainfall overall this year and he warned people across the country to expect torrential rain this month and in September and October. However, the rain will be lighter or it may even be relatively dry from June to August, said Mr Wanchai.

In this rainy season, heavy downpours could hit the Andaman coastal provinces, such as Ranong, Phangnga and Krabi, as well as the eastern provinces of Chanthaburi and Trat, according to Mr Wanchai. Currently, a westerly wind from Myanmar has hit the North and upper Northeast. That would bring high rainfall to both regions between August and September, he noted. A southeasterly wind has brought humidity from the Gulf of Thailand to the Northeast, East, Central Plains and South, with thundershowers and isolated heavy rain across those areas expected.

As the country enters the rainy season, some provinces already experienced summer storms earlier this month. Storms were also seen in the capital over the weekend as heavy rainfall drenched some parts of the city.

Deputy Bangkok governor Chakkaphan Phiewngam surveyed Srinakarin Road Sunday, between Bang Na-Trat Road and Khlong Kled in Bang Na district, to solve the route's chronic flooding. The road is liable to floods even after the moderate rain of the past week. Drainage workers and the Bang Na district office were dredging the area and installing more pumping machines.

Meanwhile, farmers in several northeastern provinces have started ploughing their rice fields in preparation for the coming harvest.

Not to sure just what "officially" exactly means? Maybe our fearless diktater has decreed it so? The SW Monsoon will not arrive here in force until it is well established on the sub-continent of India. There is still some easterly airflow that is producing mixed conditions, as was very apparent today with the high humidity. Each day we see a build up of dark clouds in the afternoon, but no rain.

Sorry if I posted this before. www.windy.com is an interesting resource if you like to tinker around with weather data. It offers a great deal of information and different ways to view it. Pete

THAILAND ENTERS MONSOON SEASON: OFFICIALS

BANGKOK — Get that umbrella ready because the rainy season has officially begun, the national weather agency said Monday.

The country entered monsoon season Saturday as southwest winds brought in humidity from the Andaman sea and caused rainfall nationwide, Wanchai Sakudomchai, director general of the meteorological department said.

The season will end mid-October in Bangkok and upper Thailand, while southern parts will see rain until December.

However, the department warned that some parts – especially the northeast – would see little rainfall June through mid-July and risked water shortages for irrigation.

Hmm, I still beg to differ! They either cannot, or DO not, read their own synoptic charts! Yes there has been some rain from the Andaman Sea on the west coast / peninsular land mass from the South West. But, ALL of the synoptic charts at all levels are still showing an easterly air flow / winds, and none of them at much speed. There is NO SW Monsoon air flow established YET! Ask the Indians! There is always confusing airflows / winds as the SW Monsoon tries to establish, but until the easterly flow pattern gives up, there in no Monsoon.

The wet season has begun, to last into mid-October

The rainy season officially began on Saturday the Meteorological Department announced on Monday, and warned of scarce rainfall to come.

A southerly wind blew a blanket of moisture across the country on Saturday, bringing downpours in many areas and marking the start of the wet season. the weather office said.

Thailand will have rain until mid-October, except in the southern region where the rainy season will continue throughout December.

However, the department warned of low and sporadic rainfall from mid-June to the end of July. This could pose problems for farmers relying on rain for their crops.

For this week, heavy rain is forecast in the northern, western and eastern regions until Wednesday, and in the northeastern, central and eastern provinces from Thursday to Sunday.

Yes, The Times of India indicates that the monsoon began there on Monday, with the India MET saying it will officially hit today. (The bureaucrats have taken over so as to match events with their predictions) Pete

...."NEW DELHI: Kerala got good rains on Monday, prompting the private weather forecast agency Skymet Weather to announce the onset of monsoon in the state which marks the arrival of the rainy season in India.".....

Yes, and that rain is from the East / South East! It is not a Monsoon flow. There is a big low over India which heralds the coming Monsoon, but it is not established yet.
There is a low in the Andaman Sea producing a South West flow towards Thailand, but it is being blocked by a big high pressure area in Southern China. In Bangkok it is lightly overcast and the wind is from the South East around 5 knots.
