State Vandalism

Post by caducus »

I live and work in Bangkok and I have not been down to Hua Hin for three or four months now.

I was horrified to read in both of the Bangkok English language newspapers that the powers that be are planning to demolish all buildings said to be 'encroaching on the beach' from the Chinese shrine to the pier.

The reason given was that the said properties 'obstruct the view'. Surely the Hilton Hotel is the biggest offender in the entire province for the crime of 'obstructing the view'.

The most recent news report said that the occupiers of the beach-front properties had been given until 1st June to vacate their premises. I saw no report stating that the demolition had taken place, and therefore assume that some reprieve has been granted.

Can anyone on the spot tell me what are the latest developments?

Is there any organised protest?

When I come down for the Jazz Festival will I be able to stay in my regular (beach-front) guesthouse?

The Bangkok Post had an article about it a few weeks back. Apparently its a government directive to try and 'clean up' Hua Hin. The land does not belong to the properties that have constructed out over the beach.

I have to agree with you though, the Hilton is the biggest eyesore, and a 'clean up' operation should start with the beaches.

I should imagine you'll be pretty safe for the Jazz Festival as nothing happens overnight here and all the places are still as they always were ... for now.

If you get anymore news post it up.
cheers.

Just read in this months Guide of Hua Hin that 2,500 locals marched in protest last month. The deadline is now the end of this month, we'll see what develops.

I had a couple of meals at Chao Lae last weekend.

They had that typical uncorned Thai attitude to it all......

Hopefully they'll all be spared...it'd kill Hua Hin for me....I like that sort of stuff....

I also like the Hilton as well...beautiful hotel...and great value.

progress ?

Post by philip »

Someone always wants to change the status quo in the alleged name of "progress" but like most of us, I suspect, I am endeared by the authentic charm and culture of the existing Hua-Hin and see no real imperative for radical change !

I stayed at the Hilton in early January and found it to be an excellent hotel, well managed and efficient with lovely, friendly staff. I would love to return and hope to do so if I can engineer enough holiday-time off work to justify the long flights from Scotland.

If anyone knows the ltwo ovely ladies who serve drinks at Seafrog Bar near the Hilton (beach side), please send them my regards - Wanida and her friend - nice people to have met...... I can't imagine they have access to the internet so word of mouth will have to suffice..... Say "Sawat Dee Krap from Philip " !! :)
