Re: Why do many expats not bother to learn to read?

have just sat here and said "L" several times and my tongue never touches the inside of my upper teeth, it touches about 1cm away from my teeth, although I can both it both ways. Maybe my tongue is longer than normal. My wife has never complained about it.

Re: Why do many expats not bother to learn to read?

like a shorter Asian tongue that makes pronouncing the letter L difficult. You sure about that? Thais have no problem producing the letter L. In fact they replace the letter R with L very often. The reason they have difficulty with R is because there is no equivalent sound in Thai. Their R is a rrr...

Re: Why do many expats not bother to learn to read?

How could a language with 40+ consonants and 20+ vowels be considered a simple language? I won't even get into the written language with it's characters for numbers. If you compare it with English, Thai has 5 tones, whereas English has dozens of tones although used differently. English has 5 vowels...

Re: Som tam 5th on Lonely Planet's top 10 best dishes

Perhaps Lonely Planet should stick to guide books. How could Som Tom be the 5th best food in the world when 99.999% of the world's population have never even heard of it before, let alone tried it. It is, after all, only a very basic salad, and not a particularly good one at that either. Not...

Re: Why do many expats not bother to learn to read?

While we always go on about how difficult it is to learn Thai, we should also sometimes have sympathy for Thais who say the same thing about English, which is probably the most difficult language in the world to learn from scratch. If you can get your head around the "tonal" side if the Th...

Re: Local schools recommendation

Haha, no such thing as good high schools here...all are brainwashing machines that teach them nothing other than the perpetuating garbage that they need the next generation to believe. Forget it. In other words....not so different from schools in most countries.... :duck: Wrong. Obviously you have ...

Re: Local schools recommendation

Yes, Salesian is a very good school for the price . My daughter has been a pupil there, and now she is in Rangsit University, Pathum Thani, Bangkok. :thumb: Yes, I agree. I have seen a very noticeable difference in my oldest daughter since she started at Salesian School. The teachers there can be a...

For Sale - 2.2 liter Mitsubishi Triton - price reduced

Hi all I have advertised this vehicle on the owner's behalf previously for 480,000 baht. The owner has now decided he will accept less in return for a quick sale. He has just been diagnosed with a very serious health problem, and needs to return to his country ASAP for treatment. There is also no gu...

Re: City Hall joins flap over pigeon-feeding

I have often seen an elderly Thai man feeding the pigeons down by the beach at 19 Rai (Queens Park) and whenever I see him, I can't help thinking just how inconsiderate he is. He probably thinks he is doing a good deed, but he shouldn't be doing it right in the middle of such a busy and popular area...

Re: Thais discover tasty grilled treat at crocodile BBQ stall in Ratchaburi

I regularly buy frozen crocodile meat at Makro but I've never tried grilling it. Usually I buy the packets of crocodile soft rib which isn't really ideal for grilling, but it is awesome when fried or cooked in a sort of casserole type recipe. Way, way, way better that pork ribs in terms of tendernes...

europtimiste-- History is against you--- there will be more and more restrictions as time goes by. yep, the anti-smoking tide is not about to turn in any of our lifetimes. It will only get more and more anti. The restrictions will increase slowly and steadily. I don't like it, or agree with it but ...

Re: How not to get sick on holiday in Thailand

Well, ever since I first set foot in Thailand back in 1997, I have only had food poisoning once, and I'm inclined to think it was caused by seafood at a Japanese restaurant in Bangkok. Diarrhea I've had a few times, probably once a year in general, but of course that can be caused by any number of t...

You are correct Pete, there were several very unhappy Thais at the bank when I was there this morning. :D

Anyway, I've just checked my online banking, and it appears the problem has now been corrected/fixed.

Re: New waste water bill, is it a scam?

You should be okay without having to buy anything special. Back in the day, if a new house was built and a new septic tank connect, the plumber would start the bacteria ball rolling by tossing in a chicken from the supermarket and it seems to always have worked. With the house we had built in Thaila...
