Re: Travel photos that show how Thailand has changed in 30 years
Take the dating of those photos with a grain of salt. The below says Phi-Phi 1987 on the left. I was there in 1987 and there was a thriving and good size village with shops and a few two story structures on that thin bit in the middle. The right side photos may be correct as post-tsunami as the cen...

Re: Black water flowing into Cha am beach
Not just there... I can’t figure out exactly where that is from the picture. Along the beach south of Cha-am there are several noticeable ‘outlets’ dumping onto the beach and creating very short ‘creeks’ into the gulf. There was a recent dispute on how to fix and route one of these that ran between ...

Re: Thai household debt deeper than ever
I know Thais who borrowed double what the house cost, and since moving in, they've bought??? 2 new cars and 7 motorcycles - I think they see it as a sign of wealth. The fact is they don't have 2 Baht coins to rub together. The question is, how do they get this unsecured credit in the first place? I...

Re: Why do some farang not wear motorcycle helmets?
A lot of the 'helmets' here are just like the toys I bought for my kids. There are no standards. I got a free helmet with a scooter I bought, but I wouldn't feel good letting my dog wear it much less me. ( I brought one from US)

Re: This Is How You Could Live in Thailand on $1,000 a Month
Then it is crap as the article included property rental costs in the $1000 and most of your other comments go against the statements in the article The article covered a wide range of conditions with assumptions that we may not want or be able to live with. ie $700 per month apartment can work if a...

Re: This Is How You Could Live in Thailand on $1,000 a Month
Not exactly TOTAL crap. Outside of housing and cars, it is realistic to live on $1000 or less. If you can afford to buy a condo (or house with Thai spouse) for cash, then ongoing housing cost is minimal. Little to no property tax and comparatively low condo association fees. Cars are crazy expensive...

Re: Hua Hin weighed down by oversupply of condos and houses
The enormous Hua Hin Energy project is nowhere near completion. A few buildings look close, but the bulk of the project has a long way to go. Most of the units fall into the above mentioned group of condos with little or no actual sea view and are quite a long walk to the beach. Especially frighteni...

Re: Could I Retire in Thailand with 45,000 baht/month?
wow lots of different opinions here. If you dont play golf and avoid buying bottles of wine then everything else is very cheap including girls. I have lived in Hua Hin and BKK and the costs are very similar, with the cost of beer being maybe 20-30 baht cheaper in HH. The cost of girls a lot cheaper...

Re: What's the hottest (chilli) food you've ever eaten?
Panang Curry is sometimes prepared with peanut butter. It'll be a little thick and usually isn't made too spicy, but can be if desired. My hottest was at a buffalo wing restaurant in the Chicago area. I knew one of the cooks and he gave me a chili concentrate that they used to mix their wing sauce. ...

Re: Life on the Dark Side - (The Black Mountain) - Pros
HHF, don't feel so bad. I'm American too and am nearing retirement and think about all of the issues above. I'd love to do what you did, but fear the same financial fate. That being said, the states aren't that great a place to be now either. Retirement in the US would be great if you're wealthy wit...

Size is the only major con for me; for a reasonable sized condo say 100sq/mtr.. you gotta cough up the BHT.

Re: Family pressures on thai wives of farang
My situation is similar to HHF's, but there can still be issues. Family is pretty much not a problem, but we have several 'mixed' marriage friends and there does seem to be a 'keeping up with the Jones's' feeling by many of them. My wife gets a bit caught up in that and I find myself paying for thin...
