I did the visa run via Ranong last monday. Above the door of the Myanmar immigration 'shed' is a sign which says that you are only allowed to travel a certain distance inland. There is certainly a '3' involved, but I can't remember whether it's 'miles' or 'kilometres'. Hope that helps.

I've used the Lomprayah service to Koh Tao a few times and would definitely recommend it. They have a VIP seating area on the upper deck of their ferry which I only found out about on my last trip. It costs around 50 baht but is well worth it with reclining seats and tv.
